Get On With Your Life

By Lucy MacDonald

Life seems to be divided into the "haves" and the "have-nots". There are those who have a definite sense of purpose; and others who seem to wander aimlessly throughout their lives without much rhyme or reason. If you are thinking "Well it's easy for other people. They have everything they need", let me assure you of one thing.

I am not talking about the abundance or lack of financial success, being with or without a partner, having that envied career or putting your career on hold while you focus on raising children. There are those who appear to have it all and yet the quality of their lives is poor; they have no idea what their life purpose is; they are just putting in time.

We are attracted to people who live life on purpose. They have a spark in their eyes and exude an enthusiasm that is magnetic. People who live with purpose, have a clear sense of what they are passionate about and how they can contribute that passion to benefit others, are truly blessed. They get up in the morning with a clear "Good morning God" versus a "Good God, morning" attitude.

Living your life purpose is at the center of who your are; the very essence of your being. Stephen Covey states that "Whatever is at the center of your life will be the source of our security, guidance, wisdom, and power." Living a life of purpose provides you with a sense of direction and mission. When you know what your life purpose is you start everyday with that in mind; it shapes how you think, what you do, and how you approach life.

Knowing what your life purpose is creates within you a desire to live with passion. This passion fuels your daily activities. When you are living purposefully you feel connected to the greater whole; you have an understanding that your purpose is part of a greater scheme of things, however you define that.

Once you have a clear idea of what your life purpose is, write it down. You will be able to use your statement of purpose as a guide in making both small and large decisions. Decisions about which university to attend; whether or not you need to move; whether you should pursue a business venture.

A statement of purpose helps you stay focused in a world of constant change. The ever-changing nature of work, leisure (or lack of if), family, and social interactions has a tremendous impact on our daily lives. Having a statement of purpose can be a constant in your life while all things around you are in flux.

Your life purpose is the unique combination of the passion that you have for something that you value and how you can share that passion with others. Life purpose = passion + contribution. There are many different ways to approach the conceptualizing of a statement of purpose. The best approach is often a simple approach.

Your statement of purpose should be fairly brief to begin with; perhaps two of three sentences. For example, my statement of purpose is "to educate and inspire others to live meaningful lives at home and at work." Your statement of purpose should be clear, concise and easy to understand.

Discovering your life purpose takes time; it does not happen overnight. However, through personal discovery, reflection, reading, and discussion with friends it is possible to turn that vague, restless, something-is-missing feeling into a powerful statement of life purpose.

Get going! A meaningful live hangs in the balance.
