What do you know about alarms?

By Jeff King

Alarms have definitely become a part of our lives. Ranging from car alarms to the more humble fire alarm these devices have entered every imaginable corner and reassure us that we will at least be warned if something bad happens.

The most important leap in numbers and use of alarms can be seen in the field of home security. The burglar alarm has gone a long way and there are virtually thousands of types of alarm you can choose from. From a typical door alarm, to closed television circuit and finally to devices imitating the bark of a dog these are all attempting to discourage possible intruders.

The fire alarm has also become a standard in today's corporate environment, but home use is also increasing, especially in more hazardous places like the kitchen.

The most important addition to these alarms is the fact that they do not only signal when something is wrong, but are also initiating countermeasures. Sprinkler systems, an automated call to police or the doctor, blocked wheels and so on. This is the main field where alarm systems have advanced and it is likely that your common alarm will become a smart alarm in the near future.

It can be foreseen that the alarm will soon cease to be used mostly by companies and become more entrenched in our homes. Home alarm systems are seeing a great sale boost if observed on a longer time scale. The reasons are not as obvious as you might think. Security has actually very little to do here, as the criminality rates have dropped consistently over the last years. The reasons behind the home system alarms' success rely on the policies enforced by insurance companies. Not having an alarm is simply too expensive.

Looking at the general alarm market you will soon see a very diversified offer, differing in price, features and seriousness from one brand to another. The internet has been particularly helpful as a marketing tool. There are no clear figures as most companies focus on niches, but it is quite easy to see that these sorts of devices are for this trading environment. They appeal to younger customers, they have a relatively high ratio between cost and size and finally there are constant improvements being made which keeps the interest fresh.

As the alarm enters the online arena, you should now take additional caution when purchasing one. There are many correct and fair retailers out there, but on the web scams are also present. As someone has put it: "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is". For buying purposes you should use services that allow recuperation of your hard earned money in case of a scam. Paypal or 2Checkout are some good examples. Altogether if you use proper caution, you should be able to purchase your alarm with minimal hassle and risks.
