Constipation: Tips for Easy, Long-Term Relief

By Murray, Tim

Constipation isn't the direst problem you'll ever have, but wouldn't it be nice if you were able to avoid it forever?

No more intestinal pains from cramping, no more straining when using the bathroom, no more days of agony – sounds good, right?

Constipation is the result of one of the following:

Bad eating habits that don't provide you with another fiber for easier elimination
Prescription or over the counter drugs
Not drinking enough water or juice
Not enough exercise
Irregular or new eating patterns
Not going to the bathroom when the urge hits

The solution is making healthier changes in many areas of your life.

Eat better. While this seems impossible in your fast-paced, fast food life, you can make smarter choices. If you must eat out order steamed vegetables and salads with protein as the side dish. Drink water or juices. Avoid alcohol, desserts, and processed wheat products when at home, too. Eat whole grains like oatmeal, wheat berries, or brown rice instead of sugary cereals, bread or pasta. Make green vegetables part of your meals, and snack on fruit.

If your supplements or prescription drugs are constipating you, and you must take them long term, add some flax seed to your diet. Sounds awful, doesn't it? It's easy. A product like Metamucil comes in capsule and powder forms making it easy to add to you daily morning routine. If you are looking at a short-term blockage problem, shop for laxatives. Just be aware that laxatives used over a long time can create a dependency and can also be quite uncomfortable when they kick into high gear.

Drink more water. Buy bottled water if your tap water is yucky. Add fresh-squeezed lemon juice to a cup of hot water for a delicious morning "laxative" for a great start to your day.

Take a twenty minute walk each morning and after dinner. Exercise can completely end constipation. No pain, lots of gain.

If you've jumped on the low-carb, high protein bandwagon and it's helping you lose your cravings but keeping you up at night with bowel problems, make sure you eat high quality mixed greens every day and take three fiber (flax) capsules daily with two glasses of water to keep you regulated.

The last solution is to go when you feel the urge. Your body is telling you it really needs to go. Listen to those urges. When you hold back and force yourself to stick to an unnatural schedule, you are likely to end up constipated. And you don't want that.

Simple solutions for an uncomfortable situation are within your grasp. Ban constipation forever!
