Diet pills: a popular phenomenon since 1950's
By Lee
diet pills are being used by millions of people who want to lose weight and they are getting more and more popular everyday. Diet pills have been a popular phenomenon since the 1950's in the United States. Phentermine diet pill was approved by the FDA in 1959. Since then weight loss diet pills have been a rage amongst people who want to lose weight. Due to this obsession of being thin, many diet pills have come to the market. Billions of dollars are being pumped into the diet industry. Some are prescription diet pills; some are non prescription diet pills.
There a variety of diet pills available in the market. Some are herbal, all natural supplements ranging from $50 to $200. They are available just everywhere. From drugstores, grocery stores, health stores, convenient stores, pharmacies and on the internet. With such easy availability these diet pills only seem to be getting popular.
In an age where everything happens at a clock of a button, most people want to lose weight by just popping a pill instead of going to the gym and sweating it out. But the big question still remains are these pills for weight loss really safe diet pills?
Most of the non prescription drugs available are not subjected to the same health standards as prescription diet pills and other controlled medication. This does not mean that prescription diet pills available for weight loss are the best diet pills available or extremely safe diet pills. They too have serious side effects and can prove extremely harmful if taken without doctor's supervision.
Most of the non prescription pills have ingredients including herbs, botanicals, vitamins, laxatives and caffeine. Doctors warn that there are no clinical trials on how these chemicals would react with the body chemistry. There is no way one can access how these would react in presence of other medications. Most of these weight loss drugs do not need any FDA approval like the prescription drugs and therefore the claims made by the drug manufacturers of non prescription drugs is always under scrutiny. The manufacturing, labeling and packaging could be unauthorized.
It is extremely important to understand that there is no miracle pill that can effectively aid in weight loss. The proven way of weight loss is the old conventional method through fitness and nutritious diet. No drug, diet pill or supplement should be added to a diet without consultation from a doctor or a medical practitioner.
Our body is not prepared for rapid weight loss. It is not designed or is not ready for pills or other substitutes, which internally stimulates or reduces metabolic activities in the body. One must remember that it is the fat that needs to be reduced for a permanent weight loss. Most of these diet supplements help in reducing the water in the body. This results in immediate weight loss. But it is not a permanent situation.
There are no short cuts to weight loss. Right food intake is more powerful than a prescribed weight loss pill. Nothing works better than a balanced diet regime to loose fat permanently. Regular exercise and right food intake will not only help in weight reduction but will also maintain the weight loss permanently.
Regular exercise is important for overall health, as well as for losing and maintaining weight. There is evidence to suggest that body fat distribution affects health risks. For example, excess fat in the abdominal area (as opposed to hips and thighs) is associated with greater risk for high blood pressure, diabetes, early heart disease, and certain types of cancer. Vigorous exercise can reduce abdominal fat and thus lower the risk of these diseases. About the Author Lee Dobbins is an associate editor to the website http://www.figurefirst.com.
