Hoodia

By Josh W

Before 2004, Hoodia Gordonii was simply an African desert succulent to most of the United States population. Since that time it has attracted growing populatrity for its appetite suppression qualities. There is now increasing use of Hoodia as a means to help lose weight.

Hoodia History
Despite its recent appearance in modern science, the San Bushmen of the Kalahari desert in South Africa discovered centuries ago that Hoodia could stave on hunger and thirst on their long hunting treks. Specifically they would ingest a piece of stem that they had cut from the plant. Records of the Bushmen's usage of Hoodia appeared as early as the 1930s but little research was started until the early 1960s. During the 1990s patents and licenses were finally applied for and by now over 20 million dollars have been spent on researching Hoodia.

How It Works
The basic premise of Hoodia is that it tricks the brain into thinking that the stomach is not hungry. This of course does not mean that you will never feel hungry. You simply will only be hungry when your body needs to eat rather than when your blood glucose levels rise and fall throughout the day. Hoodia helps cut out unhealthy snacking and stops cravings so that you prevent yourself from sabotaging your healthy diet. Typically glucose is what makes you feel full, but with Hoodia your brain releases a chemical that is actually much stronger than glucose. Thus the hypothalamus receives this signal and tells you that you are no longer hungry.

Side Effects
To date, there really are not any serious side effects. Hoodia is simply an all natural product with no stimulants. At the moment, no known serious long term side effects have been shown either, as the product is still fairly new as a weight loss tool. While suppressing hunger, Hoodia also suppresses thirst. Maintaining a healthy intake of water is essential to prevent dehydration. Hoodia can even be taken before bedtime when many people get a late night sugar craving without interrupting your sleep.

Usage
As with anything else relating to your health, you should always consult with your physician before starting a new weight loss program or before you begin taking a new weight loss supplement. Hoodia diet pills should only be used by adults over 18 who are healthy. It is perfect for you if you have problems overcoming food cravings, controlling your portion size or if you simply need help in retraining your eating habits. Those individuals who are within or normal weight range or who are underweight should not take Hoodia as a means to achieve a severe weight loss. There is always the potential for an allergic reaction to Hoodia because of the fact that it is plant material. Those with diabetes are also urged to seek the advice of their physician. Children should not use the product and women who are pregnant or who are breastfeeding. In short, Hoodia should only be used by adults over 18 who are overweight but otherwise healthy to prevent any possible health complications.
