Obesity and the Connection of Emotions with It

By Ethan Hall

It will sound a bit weird that there is some connection of emotions with obesity. Emotions can result in fueling obesity. In younger age emotional pressure might not be that much prevalent but the people in the age group of 35-plus are the most vulnerable victims of emotional pressure. They are believed to be handling the maximum pressure on them.

A research was conducted in which it was found that when people are upset, they start eating more in order to combat their emotional disturbance. Eating continuously makes them forget the negative emotions that come into their minds. So, people tend to eat more when they are anxious, sad, upset, stressed out or even bored. But when they eat so much, and get fat they get depressed about their body. This again leads to eating more to combat the stressful situation - hence forming a vicious cycle. Stress is found to be a major reason behind obesity. A person who is emotionally healthy will be physically healthy as well. Obesity represents a complex relationship with mental well-being.

Many studies have been conducted in this direction and they have revealed that there is a link between the modern lifestyle and increased rate of over eating. Junk foods that are high in fat, sugar and calories cool the body's answer to persistent stress. Another study in this direction reveals that at the time when a person is under stress, the hormones produced at that time results in the formation of fat cells. Stress also leads to sleep apnea, which is related to obesity. Sleep apnea is a serious health condition that shouldn't be taken lightly.

Being overweight not only causes physical problems but also mars the persona of a person. The people in the society undermine the obese people thereby accentuating their stress level further. Being overweight is not a disease but a bad news for body and mind.

Stress is emerging to be a main reason behind obesity. When a person is under stress then he finds it difficult to get a sound sleep. Recent studies suggest that this sleep deprivation contributes to obesity. If a person does not sleep well then a hormone called leptin is produced in the blood that increases his food craving. After the release of this hormone, the person tends to eat more thus leading to obesity. A sleep less than 7-9 hours is considered lack of sleep which results in this problem.

e is a standard way by which a person's body weight is measured to be correct or not. The weight is always measured in relation to the height. obesity unlike calculating body weight is all about the Body Mass Index (BMI) – the relation of weight in proportion to height. When the BMI count goes beyond 30 then it is a cause of concern.
