5 Ideas for a Fabulous Vacation at only a Fraction of the Price!
By Daphne Nsoroma Edwards
In this day and age of rising gas prices (among other things), people are having to decide whether they will travel, and if so, how they will afford it. We all need a break for peace of mind and to add a little fun to our daily lives, so it is important that we commit to taking that well deserved time off.
Below are 5 great ways to cut expenses and still take that trip you've been looking forward to without breaking the bank.
1. Ideas for saving on Food:
Stay at hotel with a kitchenette. This way you can buy groceries and cook some of your meals instead of eating out for every meal. You can usually find these hotels (they usually have the word "suites" in their titles) for a pretty reasonable price.
When Traveling by car, bring a cooler and fill it up with healthy meal fixings and snacks. Bagged lettuce, sandwich fillings, and vegetables with dip are great starters. You can bring other healthy sides along like granola bars, fruit, etc. This not only saves money but can give more freedom for you to control food portions and make healthy choices.
2. Ideas for saving on Site Seeing and Entertainment:
Go to a place with natural sites. Places with beaches, lakes, hiking trails, camping areas, etc. offer a great opportunity for free or near free entertainment. After swimming, hiking, exploring and the like, you can cook out, have a picnic or head out for fun at another type of site seeing activity. (Keep in mind, a picnic can be anything from a family affair to a candle lit romantic affair under moonlight.)
3. Ideas for saving on site seeing:
Do you participate in any local membership organizations. For example, many museums and zoos allow you to visit all types of other interesting institutions in other cities. Be sure to check out all of your membership guidelines to see where you can receive discounts or free admittance.
4. Ideas for saving on entertainment:
Ask hotel staff and other "natives" where the little known hot spots are in town. These folks can often tell you where the non touristy places in town are that are off the beaten path but well worth the trip. Hole in the wall restaurants with great food and lots of character, blues and jazz clubs with super local talent, art exhibits featuring up and coming artists, etc. can be inexpensive but fun. They can also give you a more "realistic" sense of your surroundings.
You can even, ask friends and family or post messages on message boards, when planning your trip, to find out who knows folks in the town you're visiting who can give you site suggestions or even show you around.
5. Ideas for Saving on Transportation:
Take public transportation. Many cities have great transit systems that are easy to navigate. Subway and bus systems usually have great maps and hotel employees can point you in the right direction. When traveling with kids, trolleys, can also be a fun, inexpensive, and exciting way to get from point a to point b. Also see if your hotel has any free shuttle services to any fun spots in town. Using any of these transportation tips can save a great amount on cab fares and tips, car rentals, gas, etc.

6. Ideas for Saving on Lodging:
Genuinely keep in touch with all of your friends and family who live out of town. When you're ready to travel, pick one or two cities that you would like to visit and see if you can stay with them. If so, you can have great company, great suggestions on places to go, and free lodging!
