Install Drupal Theme

By Sanjib Ahmad

The procedure to install Drupal themes is by far one of the best and most seamless process when compared to other content management systems.

Installing a Drupal theme is easy as "drag and drop". It can take 5 minutes or less to install a theme. In this article we will install a theme from the Drupal site. This will demonstrate all the necessary steps.

If you want a unique theme for your site that no one else is using, we recommend that you first choose a similar theme that already exists. Download it and install for your Drupal site. Then change that theme step-by-step so it becomes completely customized to reflect the design you have in mind and appropriate to your site content.

Let's say we want to install the "Spreadfirefox Theme". The spreadfirefox.com is a very popular website for users of the Firefox browser. You can see the Spreadfirefox Theme in action at http://www.spreadfirefox.com/.

1. The spreadfirefox theme requires the PHPTemplate theme engine. So we need to download it first. PHPTemplate theme engine can be downloaded at: http://drupal.org/project/phptemplate.
2. After downloading PHPTemplate theme engine, extract the phptemplate.tar.bz2 file into your themes/engines directory
3. Now download the Spreadfirefox Theme from http://drupal.org/project/spreadfirefox.
4. Extract the spreadfirefox-cvs.tar.gz file and you will get the "spreadfirefox" folder. Move this folder in your "themes" directory of your Drupal site.
5. Now login as administrator at your Drupal site.
6. Go to administer->themes and look for the spreadfirefox theme listed there.
7. Click on the "Enabled" checkbox and "Default" radio button. Now click on the Save configuration button.
8. Congratulations! You now have the Spreadfirefox Theme enbaled for your Drupal site.
