Mr. Incredible Syndrome
By Kinney Dancair
The character Mr. Incredible from the family movie "The Incredibles" is an image of what many in our civilization feel about their lives. As the movie begins, Mr. Incredible is alive with purpose, excitement, and passion as he exercises his super powers to save the world from evil. Then, as the movie progresses, his purpose is taken from him. He ends up a fat and unhappy insurance claims agent. When a human being is robbed of purpose s/he loses his/her sense of meaning. Without meaning, the human soul dies from emptiness.
Are you suffering from the Mr. Incredible syndrome? If so, here are four steps that can guide you out of that abyss. Your objective is to find your purpose in life. When you are in harmony with your purpose, you are happy and satisfied. But purpose is not always easy to find. These steps will help you to stimulate your purpose-awareness. 1) Make a list of clues. Write down the times in your life when you are happiest. What are you doing? Are there moments when it feels as though time doesn't matter, that you could do what your doing forever? Write these moments down.
2) Are any of the moments doable as a job? Does one of them come alive to you more than the others as you look down the list? Perhaps you know that blogging for money would make you happy. If so, write it down on a different piece of paper. 3) Brainstorm ways that you could make it work for you. If ideas come up like find an internet advertising online community then write it down and move to the next item. Write continuously for three minutes. If the ideas seem to stop, just start writing nonsense until the real ideas start again. Once you have a good list of ideas, 4) pick the ideas that make the most sense to you. That is your starting plan. Now comes the tough part. You have to start doing it right now. You have to get the momentum going so that you can start living the life of purpose.
When Mr. Incredible reclaimed his purpose, it opened up the floodgates of well-being into his whole life. His wife, children, and body all became healthy and thriving again. So will it be with you.
