What's making us Obese?
By Barbara Camie
Obesity is not a disorder which creeps in to scare you on a fine day. It attacks you, grows in you and conquers you gradually. It's often when we pass the alarming BMI levels [over 30 is obese] that we look back and wonder what exactly made us obese and unhealthy. Listed below are a few facts that might just give you the correct answer.
• Altered life style changes where lots of high fat food are consumed every day
• Excessive drinking and having fried unhealthy snacks along with it
• Poor eating habits where a proper time or place is not set for family meals.
• Children watch TV and eat. And they consume more due to lack of concentration
• Parents resort to junk food culture for convenience and time saving
• No time for walks, treadmill or a jog which is very unhealthy
• Excessive dieting during weekdays and binging at parties and weekends
• Every day stress in maintaining work, family and house hold chores
• Long hours of computer games and play station games which make kids lazy
• We have lost the importance of play. Children are not encouraged to go outside and play, which is an excellent personality development activity
• Availability of junk foods everywhere and over consumption of ice creams and desserts
• Consuming more calories than energy drained
Obesity is widespread in America and is slowly ringing the alarm bells in Australia as well. Schools have woken up to the unhealthy obesity signs and are coming out with BMI measurements or suggesting a health report card. Workshops, seminars and advertisements creating health awareness on the obesity issues can be influencing. More than the schools and governments, we have to take an initiative to change our lifestyle and unhealthy habits. You don't have to escape food but eat in moderation to maintain health. Remember, obesity is not a simple medical problem which can be treated with diet pills or weight loss methods easily. But it's a complex life threatening disorder. We should accept the seriousness of it and work towards maintaining a healthy way of life.
