The Dominican Republic the Crisis Continues into 2005
By Donald Harrison
Don’t let the IMF or anyone else kid you about the crisis in the Dominican Republic. Things are no better.
It may be better for Leonel Fernandez and his government for taxing the people until they can’t breathe. It may be better for the IMF because they met their quota of bailing out bank scandals but there is no money in the street and people aren’t eating and prices are at an all time high!!!
The dollar has been forced down to 28 to 1 from 56 to1 by political means and the lack of money in the hands of the people is causing an unemployment crisis.
Ad insult to injury the prices of gasoline go up every Friday and it is creeping up on four dollars a gallon and people say that five dollars a gallon is just around the corner.
Things are great for the economists that make the economy look great. Things are great for the IMF and the World Bank who are trying to help by dumping money on the government. Things are great for the government but that’s about where it ends.
Unfortunately for Americans or anyone carrying Euros or dollars the prices are unbearable and a new vacation retreat needs to be considered. About the Author Just a traveling school teacher!
