Restaurant Tables - that make all the difference!

By Amarn Macbeth

Depending on the food and image concept, the style of the elegant dining table is not a straightforward decision. Consider the tabletop material, tabletop sizing, the style of table base, shape and colour. Most lavish restaurant suppliers of furniture sell dining tables as tabletops and bases separately.

Plush restaurant settings normally compel linen to be of the order so arguably the dining table surface does not count. However the considerations of furniture listed above remain relevant as the customer is likely to notice the tiniest of details.

Tabletop materials come in many options including marble, laminated wood, hardwood, MDF, Rein composites, unsullied brand, glass. All have their relative advantages and disadvantages. The best option for the dining table would be a solid polished hardwood in a medium dark effect. Hardwood is does nicely to fit in with in elegant restaurants for haute cuisine or modern contemporary food concepts. As a solid material it requires less management, it is timeless in image and has durability. If the restaurant furniture required table linen then the tabletop surface will look fine when the prorogue linen is changed, which WOULD be seen by the customer.

The shape of the dining table is commonly a choice of round or oblong. Avoid rectangular and oval shapes as they are to a greater extent appropriate to banquet furniture and canteen type occassions. Still, a big antique style oval table could be suitable for a private(a) dining room.

A mixture of dining table shapes is recommended as they have their unique strengths. Round tables of standard sizes can seat more than four people, although square tables can be butted against to each one other to produce long tables required for large functions and dinner parties. Having a mixture will allow the restauranteur to not only take advantage of the relative strengths and weaknesses of both table shapes, but create more visual impact in the restaurant than using tables of only one shape. More information regarding seating plans and table layouts is covered later. Consider the profile of the customers being targetted as certain shelve shapes will be more tactile than others:

Groups larger than 4 normally stage business people - Large round table

Groups of 4 normally informal friends or two couples - square or round

Couples - Square

Dining table top sizes are recommended to be 800mm be it encircle or square. Should space is tight then the width of the table may be reduced to no less than 750mm. If there is room, then several group size tables can be deployed using round table sizes of 1000mm. One of the overiding considerations is knowing your client. The restaurant could be targetted towards certain demographic marketing groups such as couples, groups of business people, small groups of friends.

Since most dining table bases are sold separately to the table tops, the smart eating house owner has options at their disposal. The table base is very important as it is an indication of the owners attention to detail which will make all the difference in the plush customer's opinion of the restaurant furniture and organisation. Thus, take table bases that feel good and hold some cosmetic qualities to enhance the general restaurant image. This may be in the form of wooden carvings, wrought iron motifs, four-legged,etc.

The dining table foundation must be strong and heavy to prevent the table being easily knocked over creating accidents and disruption to restaurant service. The table base must also be designed so that there is space for the elegant diner to place their legs and have freedom of movement without knocking their shins.
