Giving Up Smoking - Those First Few Days

By Dan Nico

Shortly after quitting smoking, many people experience similar side effects as a result of ditching the cigarettes. A few days to a week is the usual amount of time before the quitter will start noticing changes that have been informally called "Quitter's Flu".

-Coughing

Coughing is likely to be the main symptom that comes on shortly after quitting. Some people report a tingling or singing accompanying the coughing, some have even described the sensation as having their lungs "filled with cement" or that they may feel "heavy". Don't worry though as this is just a phase, keeping focused on your goal of being a non-smoker should alleviate any anxiety about the coughing.

-"Smoker's hack"

A rather unpleasant experience for anyone giving up smoking, it basically describes a coughing fit where mucus and debris might be expelled from the lungs into the mouth. The best advice I can give is to keep some tissues around at all times, to avoid any embarrassing incidents!

Some experience increased coughing and hacking during and after exercise when quitting, and it tending to happen predominantly in the morning hours.

-Munchies

Another infamous effect of quitting is the "munchies", impulsive cravings for food and drink. This may scare some people who are sensitive about their weight, but rest assured that this does not have to be permanent.

-Stress

Your stress levels and irritability might also increase immediately after quitting. Planning some relaxing activities ahead of quitting and having a strong and understanding support network will help you though.

As a quitter myself I experienced many symptoms described and can testify that while uncomfortable, there really is no need for alarm about any of them. However if you feel the need, don't hesitate to schedule an appointment with your doctor.

Good luck on your journey to a happier and healthier life!
