Linen, How Thread Count Can Affect Your Sleep

By Rebecca Mischen

Stress. We can all relate to the emotional pressure in our daily lives. We not only have longer work days, but we end up bringing our work home with us. We attempt to balance the many responsibilities of our job, family and home life. This means that a good night's sleep is more important than ever.

We've all gone to the local retail stores that offer "bed-in-a-bag" linens for discount prices. Unfortunately, even after numerous washings, we still end up with stiff and irritating material. This definitely decreases the amount of deep sleep that we need.

Imagine slipping into a cocoon of soft delicate sheets at the end of a long day. Cradle your head on a pillowcase with such a luxurious feel that it can only lead to a night full of peacefulness. This is where the thread count of your linens makes a difference.

The number of threads (both vertical and horizontal) that are woven into each one square inch of fabric equals the total thread count. Usually, the higher number of thread count is equivalent to a smoother surface of the fabric and will feel softer to your touch. You also have to consider the ply of the thread. There are single and two-ply options. The two-ply doubles the thread count of the fabric. This not only gives you the softness, but also produces a more durable fabric. Because the fabric is more tightly woven, sheet sets with a higher count will have added longevity, and will withstand more washings and activity.

Egyptian Cotton is the best of all worlds. It is only grown and hand selected on the banks of the Nile River. Not only is the selection supervised, but it's known world wide for its softness and durability. These high thread count sheets have long been thought to be only for the very wealthy.

Higher thread counts not only feel softer and give you a better night's sleep, but they also extend the life of the fabric. Your initial high quality investment saves you money in the long run because you will be replacing your bedding and sheets less often. With today's hectic standards, we deserve the best.
