What's in a logo?
By Florie Lyn Masarate
When you see a red letter “M” with yellow lining, what comes to your mind? McDonalds. Upon seeing a slowly forming castle at the beginning of a film, you would know it is from Walt Disney. Other things, persons, organizations that even before their names or appearance, people has instant recognition. What made them so? Their logos.
Logos are the trademark that represents an organization or a group. They are created for easy and instant recognition. When logos were first used, its main purpose was to give distinction between products of the same industry. They were put on labels, tags and packages so people can easily recognize the one they preferred. Little did the early users of this know that theses logos would define and revolutionize the advertising world.
The most important thing making a logo is the concept. Does it represent exactly what the company is about? Be able to determine if it is fitting to the company or person. How will people react to it? Making it as eye-catching and as simple as possible to be able to reach out to all types of people. Will it have a lasting effect? It has to be memorable enough for the people to not forget them a day after and in the years to come.
The problem encountered in companies having a successful and well-known logo is that it is difficult for them to change it when the time comes. People tend to get used to the usual logo that when it had to change with the changing time, confusion and misinterpretation is like to happen. Companies made changes but the old style is still present, like colors and design, to keep up with what people had gotten to know and used to already. Examples of these are Coca-Cola and Pepsi. Their transition from the old to the modern logo is not that different, the same style is still there.
Logo designs is said to be one of the most difficult field in graphics design. There are numerous factors to be considered. Colors, conceptualization, style and marketing strategy are among these. As it is one of the strongest marketing tools of a company, one wrong color can bring drastic marketing result. A logo as miniscule and as simple can either make or break the company.
Many companies are specializing in creating logos. But no matter how good they are, factors are needed to be considered beforehand to be able to achieve the desired results. Its representation: correctly presenting what the company is about. The costs it will take. Good appearance whether big or small. Its edge among the competitors and its impact.
What’s in a logo? One’s success and failure. Take your pick.
