DIY Mosaic Tile Bistro Table

By Margaret Sorensen

How many times have you passed by a trendy café and noticed those lovely mosaic tile covered tables? I don't know about you, but I cannot take my eyes off of those tables when I see them. "I must have one," I thought to myself! I decided to try making one of my own, and I was thrilled to discover how simple it really was. Follow these simple instructions, and you can have one too! You will need the following supplies:

A Table Base and Ring
A Plywood Tabletop
Hammer
Screwdriver and Screws
Tiles of various colors
Quart of Exterior Paint
Tile Cutters
Caulking Gun
Safety Goggles
Liquid Nails
Grout
Grout Float
Grout Sponge
Sketch Paper
Colored Pencils
Work Gloves

1. Start by cutting the plywood for the tabletop to size, and paint both sides with exterior latex paint. Allow to dry.
2. When the paint has dried, affix the outer ring with screws.
3. Put your goggles on and proceed to smash your tiles with a hammer. Cover the tiles with a blanket before smashing them to keep debris from scattering, and be sure the glazed side is down to avoid damaging the finish.
4. Sketch your design idea onto the tabletop with your colored pencils. The colors will help you keep your design in mind while working.
5. Using your caulking gun, place a dab of liquid nails on each piece of tile and secure them in the proper area on your tabletop. You can use your tile cutters to clean up the edges. Be sure to leave a slight gap between each piece of tile.
6. Continue until your design is complete. Don't forget to vary your colors.
7. After letting your tile dry for 24 hours, it will be time to use the grout. Using your grout float, spread the grout over and between your tiles. Use a grout sponge to clean up the excess grout.
8. Attach the tabletop to the base, and you have a new mosaic bistro table.

I invited a friend over when I was finished to review my work, and she fell immediately in love. We spent the rest of the day chatting, and sipping Martinis!! She wants me to help her make one of her own. All in a days work!
