Scholarships

By Sasha

A scholarship is a financially based award or financial aid that is presented to an individual in order for that person to pursue their education at a higher level. There are a number of factors that are considered when a person is awarded a scholarship including the need for financial assistance, athletic achievements, academic achievements, public service and even ethnicity. There are a number of ethnic scholarships available based on the aforementioned criteria that are offered to African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans and Asian or Pacific Island descendants. An ethnic scholarship is earned the same way traditional scholarships are but they are only available to people of a certain ethnicity.

Scholarships including ethnic scholarships are usually financed by educational institutions or not for profit organizations. Donations made to any scholarship foundations in the United States are tax deductible. Any scholarship can be for any amount of money and can be easy to locate with the accessibility of the Internet. If a person is looking for an ethnic scholarship or another type of scholarship, a quick search online will most likely have them completing the application process in no time.

Every year there are a number of students who qualify for more than one ethnic scholarship. There are several places that offer an ethnic scholarship to African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans and Asian and Pacific Island descendants. Some of the scholarships that are open to all minorities include the American Chemical Society Scholars Program, American Geological Institute Scholarship, Dow Jones Newspaper Minority Fund, Earl G. Graves NAACP Scholarship, Ed Bradley Scholarship, The Hyatt Hotel's Fund for Minority Lodging Management Students, Jackie Robinson Scholarship, Many Voices Residency Program, National Minority Junior Golf Scholarship and many, many more. A minority scholarship that is open to all minorities offers the most selection than any individual minority scholarship group.

An African American looking for an ethnic scholarship has many different scholarships that can be applied for. Some of these scholarships include the Allison Fisher Scholarship, Herbert Lehman Scholarship Program, NAACP Scholarships, National Achievement Scholarship Program, National Association of Black Accountants National Scholarship Program, National Association of Black Journalists Scholarship, National Black MBA Association Scholarship Program, 1040 K Race Scholarships, the United Negro College Fund Scholarships A through Z and dozens more.

A person of Hispanic descent can apply for an ethnic scholarship from the Congressional Foundation of Western Massachusetts Latino Scholarship Program, BECA Foundation Scholarships, First In My Family Scholarship Program, Fulfilling Our Dreams Scholarship Fund, LULAC National Scholarship Fund and several others. Native Americans looking for an ethnic scholarship can apply for the Native American/American Indian Education Foundation Scholarships, American Indian Endowed Scholarships, Continental Society, Displaced Homemaker Scholarship, Daughters if Indian War Scholarship, Tribal Lands Environmental Science Scholarship and many more. Asian American and Pacific Islanders can apply for an ethnic scholarship from the Asian Pacific American Heritage Council Scholarship, the Indian American Scholarship Fund, Kam Society Scholarship, United Methodist Church Hispanic, Asian and Native American Scholarship and dozens of others.

Other options for an ethnic scholarship can include the National Merit Scholarship, Miss America and America's Junior Miss pageant. No matter how many or how few ethnic scholarship programs a person applies for, they are taking the first important step that leads to a bright future.
