Car Transport

By Francis

Car transport services are something a person will most likely need if he or she is moving from one location to another and travelling by airplane or moving while owning more than two cars. Many people have more than one vehicle and sometimes the second or third car is a custom or classic car that shouldn't be exposed to any type of elements for too long. A car transport service is perfect for these types of situations as they move cars from one location to a number using a number of means including train, tractor-trailer, ferry, open carrier, closed carrier and other methods of transportation.

When a person goes to use a car transport service, the service will be unlike any other kind of transport service such as mail service or UPS service and does not offer any kind of guarantees. Almost everything that is said to a customer looking to use a car transport service should be taken as more of an estimate than an actual figure. There are a number of factors that can cause the delay of a car delivery from a car transport service including mechanical problems, adverse weather conditions and even problems with customers that delay departure times. Being prepared to have patience with a car transport service and realistic expectations is the best way to approach the transportation process.

One realistic expectation is to understand that a car transport service may offer something called 'door-to-door' shipping, but the doesn't necessarily mean that a car will be delivered directly to a customer's doorstep. Sometimes this means that a car transport vehicle will do whatever it can to get a car to a person while remaining safe and following all traffic laws. Some car transport services carry a number of vehicles in a truck that could be over fifty feet long. Many residential areas don't have the kind of room that is necessary for such a long truck to steer and turn. It isn't uncommon to have a car transport service driver ask a customer to pick up their car at the closest large parking lot in the area.
Another expectation is to make sure that all cars are insured in case of any kind of accidents, damage or theft during the transportation process. Some car transport services will offer their own car shipping insurance at extra cost, but it might not be necessary. Some personal auto insurance policies include coverage for car transport situations and already protect the customer. If not, it is always an excellent idea to get all of the transport information including any kind of extra coverage in writing.
Before any car is moved by a car transport service, owners should take the time to remove any personal items that are inside of the vehicle including the trunk and also inspect the car for any existing scratches or dings to the body. Remember to turn off any car alarms and remove any loose accessory parts from the body of the car. When releasing a car to a car transport service, be sure to check the initial inspection report before completing the paperwork and have a copy on hand when the car is delivered.
