The Nose Knows
By Bill Sault
Your home should smell good. Make careful attempts to get rid of
the following smells:
Pet odors
Stale cooking/food smells
Cigarette smoke
Smell makes an enormous impact on people when they enter a
home. Furthermore, while smokers and pet owners may not even
notice the smells in their home ¨C having become quite accustomed
to them ¨C they may be an overwhelming turn-off for people
entering your home.In this case, have a non-smoking, non-pet
owning friend come over to perform a sniff test.
While the kitchen can be a source of great smells in the home it
can also be the blame of some of the worst.
Vinegar is a great tool for nuetralizing odors. One very easy way to
rid your kitchen of odors is to let a small pot of vinegar and water
solution simmer on the stove. To deodorize your garbage disposal
and kitchen drains simply pour one half cup of vinegar down the
drain.Let this stand for 20 minutes then rinse with cold water.
While it used to be recommended that you bake bread or steam
cinnamon potpourri before company or a potential buyer was to
come over, it¡¯s no longer recommended. To much aroma can be just
as offensive an odor on the nostrils,So make sure you go easy on
things such as candles, potpourri and spray air fresheners.
If you insist upon adding a scent to your home, make it a very ¨C
repeat, very ¨C lightly scented candle, or scented oil.
The best way to get rid of scent problems in a home isn¡¯t to cover
them up, but instead, it¡¯s to remove them at the source.
Recommended techniques for accomplishing this include:
Having the air vents cleaned
Replacing old, smelly carpeting
Smoking outdoors
