The relaxing and health-giving properties of bathing take their origins from as far back as the Roman Empire. Baths were a prominent feature of Roman life, with citizens being encouraged to bathe daily in one of the many public baths. But it took until the end of World War I for the modern purpose-built bathroom to become a main feature of every house - mostly as a result of the construction boom in the United States at the time. Before this time, bathrooms had simply been converted bedrooms or spare rooms, but the 1920s saw a revolution in the way bathrooms were designed, leading to better bathrooms for people across the world.
Today, modern innovations have heightened people's experiences of bathrooms, clearly cementing them as a place where people can retreat and relax, rather than simply being a functional area. Bathrooms are now designed specifically for the purpose of providing a place in the house to unwind, and this can be done in a variety of ways, including the arrangement of fittings and the decoration of the bathroom.
