Family Vacation

By Jennifer Hayashida

Planning a Family Vacation

Planning a family vacation can be fun. It is a time that the whole family can work together in deciding where to go. It is important to take family vacations and make memories that would last a life time.

Plan in advance, so that everyone can plan. A year in advance is the best, but may work at 6 months. Try to bring the family to a central meeting place that everyone enjoys or may enjoy. You probably know the whole family's preferences, so it should be easier to figure out. Try not to do vacations at your parents house, as they need a break from their homes as well. Make the vacation short,(a week or less) as inexpensive as possible, and try different things to keep it interesting. Do some homework on family schedules and plan the time most can make it. It is sometimes impossible for all to make it and if you do this on a yearly basis everyone will eventually be able to see each other at least every couple of years. Holidays are the best times to try and plan for usually because most people are off of work at those times. If you can't do holidays other occasions like anniversary's and birthdays. Have at least one other family member help make plans, so that the "burden" is not on one person. One could be in charge and delegate some other things to do, like meal planning, room reservations, activities to do in the area etc. Make sure that there is a variety of choices, but not too many as to get bogged down. Having others help plan will also help get enthusiasm going. There are many fun things to do that are economical such as, camping, old time threshing shows, Civil and Revolutionary War re-enactments, Back to 50's car shows, local museums, orchards, parks, zoos, etc. These can also be very educational besides being fun.

It is important to get together with family because family is where you get your values from and is a great way to pass those on to the next generation. Besides, you never know where life is going to take you or a family member and you will be happy you had that last time together. It is also important to teach your children the value of being together with your family as well as being there for them when the need arises. All the efforts of getting together will be worth the effort in the end.
