Pay Per Click

By Chris Chenoweth

One of the most effective ways to promote your website is to use pay per click advertising. Pay per click advertising on search engines permits you to select keywords you would like your website to appear for when a search is performed.

You choose the amount you are willing to pay each time a person clicks on the search results. The more you are willing to pay per click, the higher your site will appear in the results for the keywords you choose. In this way, you expose your website to scores of other relevant websites.

Pay per click is an excellent method for revealing your website to millions of people. However, it is not for everyone. There is risk involved and it can be quite expensive. Promoting your website by using pay per click is for those who are trying to generate serious targeted traffic to their website.

There are standards that must be met before a marketing campaign can begin. Websites that contain offensive material are not allowed. A website with poor quality, broken links, or similar issues will be banned. Make sure you have a good quality, non-offensive, family-friendly website before you pursue a pay per click promotion program.

Once you have designed your ads and submitted them to the company, you will need to establish the price per click you are willing to pay. At this point, the campaign begins and your ads will start showing on websites that have chosen to have your advertisement displayed in return for money.

Each time a unique user clicks on your ad, you are charged an amount based on the rate you established. If you set the click rate at one dollar and five unique users click on your ad, you owe the company five dollars. The money is divided between the website owner that shows the ad and the company.

The advantage to this type of advertising is that you only pay for the unique clicks on the ads that lead to your site. Therefore, you get only targeted traffic to your website which makes very effective use of your money.

WHERE TO FIND PAY PER CLICK ADVERTISING:

Since there are hundreds of search engines that use pay per click advertising, you must decide which ones will help you the most. Start by investigating the costs of pay per click advertising for certain search engines. The larger the search engine, the more you will have to bid in order to acquire your keywords.

The largest search engines in the pay per click business are Yahoo and Google. Google is not actually a pay per click search engine but it offers pay per click advertising in text boxes on the right hand side of the search results pages.

Make sure you check out other, smaller search engines. Even though they are smaller, their pay per click rates for keywords will be lower. If you are just starting out and are not flush with money, this might be your best option.

WORDS OF CAUTION:

Always keep in mind when using pay per click advertising; NEVER start out making a large investment. Start with the minimum amount and see how the search engine performs. Does it deliver much traffic? Does the traffic convert into paying customers?

Pay per click advertising can be a very effective way of promoting your website but you must do your research first. Remember to test and test some more!
