Five Steps to Selecting the Right Shed

By Shawn Hart

There comes a point when your home might not be able to store all of the things that your family collects over the years. When this happens, you must make a choice between two options. Either you could move into a larger house, or you could purchase a storage shed to put in the back yard. In the interest of saving thousands of dollars, your best choice will likely be to purchase a storage shed. Now the question you must ask yourself is what kind of storage shed you should buy. With hundreds of different styles, uses, and options, choosing the right shed for you can be daunting. But there is help. The following five steps will help you to be able to make a more educated decision about what kind of shed to purchase.

Step One. Think about what the principal function of your shed will be. You may want to use it simply for storage, perhaps you want a small workshop to work on your personal hobby, or maybe you want a place to pot plants and to store gardening tools. The decision about how you will primarily use your shed has a big effect on what size and shape of shed you need. As a basic principle, it is best to purchase the largest shed you can afford that will still fit in with your backyard landscape. It is always easier to work with too much space rather than not enough. Also, considering the shed's use will help you decide if you need windows, skylights, exhaust fans, etc in your storage shed.

Step Two. Figure out whether the shed will be used daily or only on occasion. If you will use the shed often, be sure to find a style that will be easily accessible and will have ample lighting. Skylights and windows normally supply enough light, but in some cases, electric lighting will be a necessity. If you intend to use it for a garden storage shed to store lawn care tools, be sure that the doors are at least 34 inches wide, because most lawn mowers will fit through the doorway and can be easily stored and removed.

Step Three. Consider how important it is that the shed looks on your property. In many cases, a simple vinyl or metal shed will look fine and will be solely for practical use. In other instances, you want a nice looking design that will add to the appearance of your backyard. Bear in mind that any shed you purchase will either add to or detract from your property value. Metal and vinyl sheds tend to be less expensive, but often look plain, although various designs and colors are available. Wood sheds and sheds with pre-finished sidings often benefit your property value and add personality to your backyard, but they also tend to be more expensive than metal and vinyl sheds. When making this decision, try to find a shed that will fit your personality or the character of your house.

Step Four. Decide on the location of your shed and consider the slope and accessibility of the site. Having a level surface is the first thing you need before erecting a shed. Be aware that a steeper slope will require more work than an already flat area. Normally, if the elevation changes six inches or less over the entire dimension of the shed, patio stones can be used to level out the surface. It is also recommended that about six inches of topsoil be removed and replaced with gravel in areas affected by frost upheaval or poor drainage.

Step Five. Be considerate of how your new shed may affect your neighbors. If your neighbor has a beautifully manicured backyard, it would be inconsiderate and an eyesore to put up an ugly shed right next door in plain view. Take time to tell your neighbors that you plan to put up a shed and they will appreciate your thoughtfulness. You may even want to invite your neighbors over to help you erect the shed and then afterwards have a BBQ or have a small neighborhood get together. The main idea here is to maintain good relations with them and to avoid any disputes or conflicts.

In conclusion, once you have gone through each of these steps, take plenty of time to research the many different types of sheds and options available. When ordering a shed online, be sure to read through all warranty information and return policies because sheds often cannot be returned once delivered. Try to find reviews and additional information about different shed manufacturers to ensure that you are purchasing the highest quality storage shed available. Decide whether you want to purchase a shed kit, which comes with pre-cut pieces that need to be assembled, or a fully assembled shed. Be sure to check with your local government for any ordinances or permits you will need to receive in order to install a shed on your property. Make sure that you can be available at the time of delivery and have a friend or two available to help unload and construct your new storage shed.
