Dr Gunther Von Haagens (Bodyworld's) Teaches Me Chinese Reading System On Plane

By Sam Beatson

I met Dr. Von Haagens (a multimillionaire doctor who invented 'plastination') on a flight back from China and he let me in on his secret passion for educating people in how to easily learn the Mandarin Chinese script.

Chinese Symbols For Words used to reflect the meaning, and to an extent still do. Above is the Chinese symbol for the English word "Infinity".

Chinese characters do look complicated and random, but we can assure you that they aren't as fearsome as they first seem. There are many rules that you can learn to help you recognize them.

Chinese symbols for words are composed of strokes as English words are of letters. Like the letters, strokes do not carry meaning on their own; however, unlike the letters, strokes do not correspond to sounds.

There are around 2000 Chinese symbols for words. These symbols can combine together to make Chinese characters. The Chinese started to use these symbols around 5000 years ago. At that time, people used to write these symbol on turtle shells and other animal bones, in later years some books and stories about history was written on long and thin bamboo sheets. The sentences were written from right top to left bottom . Only the privileged and royal family, a small group people were able to learn reading and writing. Books were very heavy and expensive. 2000 years ago, the first Chinese emperor Qin Shihuang (means first emperor) started using official Chinese symbols for words. These symbols like pictures indicated the meaning of words through different strokes depicting an image, scene or representation of such. Chinese symbols for words have changed over the course of history. These evolutions in writing Chinese take place regularly. If the government decide a word requires or is now more frequently written in a new of slightly different way, there is an academic body who keep a list of all the current characters. In the Han dynasty, paper made from fabric was invented and the Chinese started use brush and ink to write. Since 1949, the new Chinese government set up the simple Chinese characters (simplified Chinese text), which is now used in the Chinese mainland and Singapore as the official language with the way of writing beginning from left to right. Taiwan, Hong Kong and some overseas Chinese still using traditional Chinese. Some books still are printed in the traditional way and have to be read from right top to bottom . New (simplified) Chinese words look simple to write and easy to remember, but some people consider there has been a loss of the traditional culture, from these simple character, it hard to work out or deduce the original meaning. In mainland China nowadays, the new generation who were born after the 60s ( the cultural revolution ) may find it hard to read and writing the traditional Chinese symbols for words
