Spending the Millionaire Cash Flow

By Adam Smith

Are you sure you want to be rich? I mean really rich? Like the kind of rich where you have so much cash flow coming in you don't even know what do with all this money – except for swim in it. Being a millionaire would definitely be great. Think about all the great things you could do with your millions in cash flow.

For starters, if you had a just a million dollars to blow and you were also a huge fan of the Wendy's Frosty, then why not head down to you local Wendys and get your Frosty on. Of course, if you are planning on blowing your whole million on a the worlds largest order of Frostys then you might want to phone it in just in case they need little lead time to whip out your million Frostys. Now a disciplined millionaire would never imagine blowing their cash flow in this manner, but who said anything about discipline?

Suppose you just won $350 million dollars in the greatest lottery game on Earth. You got it, the Powerball. After deciding to take the money as a monthly cash flow payment, you end up with a paltry check worth $234,842 each month for the next 30 years. Because you are a huge music fan and have fallen in love with new Apple Ipod Nano you make it your goal to buy everyone in the United States a new Nano. All right genius millionaire, are you going to have enough? That is some serious cash flow you are bringing in but just how many Ipod Nano's could you purchase each month? Assuming you go with the 1GB Nano, priced at $150, each month you could buy 1,565 people a brand new Nano each month. Using your millionaire calculator, you could extrapolate that monthly purchase out over 30 years and ultimately buy 563,400 Americans an Ipod Nano. Well, you made a nice dent, but even dropping all your cash flow on the Nanos will make only a small dent in buying every American some Ipod goodness.

But what if you were Bill Gates rich? What would your time be worth? Think about it in the light Brad Templeton first shed upon that very subject:

Consider that he made this money in the 25 years or so since Microsoft was founded in 1975. If you presume that he has worked 14 hours a day on every business day of the year since then, that means he's been making money at a staggering million dollars per hour, around $300 per second.

We're assuming about 4 seconds to bend down and pocket the bill. Of course he can afford to hire people to follow him and pick up any $1000 bills he may drop.

Oh to be filthy rich. Living as a millionaire or billionaire would be a nice problem to have. Given the sudden increase in leisure time one might enjoy after winning the jackpot, you would have plenty of time to figure out way to spend that huge cash flow of money you now have pouring in.
