What is New Media?

It's the latest phrase to hit the web, and from Web Design Specialists to Search Engine Optimization Consultants everybody has there own opinion of what the phrase "New Media" actually means.

New Media is nothing more than a term to distinguish between "Old Media" such as printed newspapers, newsletters and magazines and new forms of information communication including:

Web Sites
Chat Rooms
Audio and Video Streams
Digital Recordings (on removable storage such as cd';s and dvd's)
Pod Casts
Blogs

In fact I can carry on typing indefinitely giving you examples of New Media (especially web New Media) but the list would never be able to be completed as each day seems to bring yet another new way to communicate information to people from across the globe.

So even thought the phrase "New Media" is relatively new, the actual technology is Old Hat to many of the more seasoned Web Developers, but one thing is for sure, technology never stops evolving and today's New Media may very well be tomorrow's Old News!

So Why Is New Media So Popular?

Well many out there still believe that the internet is simply "nonsense" (my Father is actually one of the culprits who genuinely thinks that the world would be a better place without all these "gizmo's and gadget's" in fact, he often purveys his opinions in between receiving text messages on his mobile phone, and I can only imagine how he would react if this amazing "gizmo" was no longer available to him!!!

The fact is, that just as mobile phones, and constant msn messages, and rss news scrollers on websites, and explorer automated updates can be a complete pain, without new media, the world may be much more peaceful, but in my humble opinion it would also be a very, very boring place!

New Media also brings us amazing stories from across the Globe, some disgraceful News Stories have been uncovered during conflicts in many war-torn Countries, and although the behaviour of certain parties was no less than obscene, it was probably no different from many other events that have happened during world conflicts of the past, however, New Media was able to bring such stories to our own living rooms, offices and even mobile phones, so maybe it has actually helped to bring guilty parties to justice.

So in answer to the question, What Is New Media, it is the evolution of communication and the development of new technology that is helping to bring all walks of life, from all over the world, closer together.
