So You Want to be a Millionaire? Name the Capital of Rhode Island!

By Richard Flowers

"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own, and you know what you know. And you will be the guy who'll decide where you'll go. Oh the places you'll go."
Dr. Seuss

I always enjoy quoting from Dr. Seuss whenever I begin writing an article. Dr. Seuss was master at crafting words using rhyme, meter and rhythm to create his outstanding children's stories. Dr. Seuss was probably the greatest children's writer of our time and his fantastically written stories enabled children to read while being entertained. Many people however never thought about the quotations of Dr. Seuss having such profound insights on everyday living.

Have you ever watched or even fantasized about being on a television game show such as "Millionaire" and wondered if you could answer the final one million dollar question? Picture this, you are on the one million dollar mark and the question is to name the capital of Rhode Island. You have four choices, but you have used all of your lifelines and you really don't know the correct answer. You chances are only 1 in 4 that you will get the question right. What can you do? Actually the more germane question would be: What should I have done?

"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn; the more places you'll go."
Dr. Seuss

Well I have the solution. I have devised a system that uses the power of music to help you remember all fifty of the capitals and states of our country. I have this system available at my website as a word file download with an embedded audio clip. It is available at a very reasonable fee by clicking on Richard's products in the index. I have used this system with first graders and they have quickly learned all of the capitals and states. Research has proven the power of music on learning outcomes.

Recent research is just now beginning to show the profound affects of music on learning and our lives. The College Entrance Examination Board research reports:

Students of the arts continue to outperform their non-arts peers on the SAT, according to reports by the College Entrance Examination Board. In 2004, SAT takers with coursework/experience in music performance scored 57 points higher on the verbal portion of the test and 40 points higher on the math portion than students with no coursework or experience in the arts. Scores for those with coursework in music appreciation were 63 points higher on the verbal and 41 points higher on the math portion. (see table below)

In my own classroom, I use every opportunity in using music and rhythm in daily instruction. I have seen how music and rhythm work wonders with my students to learn so many fantastic things. For example in science I devised a song for the kids to remember Moh's Hardness Scale in geology. The Moh's hardness scale for minerals has been used since 1822. It simply consists of ten minerals arranged in order from 1 to 10. Diamond is rated as the hardest and is indexed as 10; talc as the softest with index number 1. I keyed the minerals in the scale to a familiar tune and the kids learned the scale promptly. I have done the same with the presidents, states, capitals, colonies, planets, Great Lakes, Visible Spectrum, Central American Countries, groupings of taxonomy and many other facts. Remember, this is done with first graders!

I encourage you to learn the system for remembering the states and capitals from my website. It is great for children and adults. It is available from my website as a downloadable word file with audio and a very inexpensive price.

You never know when you are going to be sitting in the hot seat being asked the million dollar question! Even if you are never in that hot seat, you and your children can impress everyone with your new found knowledge of knowing all of the states and capitals by heart!

"Think left and thing right and think low and think high. Oh, the thinks you can think up if only you try."
Dr. Seuss
