Hurricane Season - Secure Your Data Files!!

By woody bowers

No matter where in the world you live it is likely you will at some point encounter mother natures rage. Last year we were hit with hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunami’s, wild fire, and floods.
All of these acts of nature can have a profound effect on your life and business.

If your place of business was struck by lightning or hit by a hurricane, are you prepared for the down time?
Let’s say your computers were damaged and all of your business documents such as billing, receiving, payroll, vendor files, everything you had was lost forever.
Can you recover from such a disaster?

There are some actions you can take now that can make the recovery process more expedient and less costly.
In my line of work I speak with people every day who have similar situations. Most people don’t realize just how dependent we have become on our computers.

I have put together some tips to help you from ever having to deal with this type of problem. Practice what you read here, it could save you a fortune.

1.) Routinely backup all of your data files.
2.) Verify the backups are good.
3.) Keep a copy of your backup files in a different location.
4.) Use an off-site backup service
5.) When using an external drive as a backup; always disconnect the drive from the computer and the electrical outlet when not in use.
6.) Keep your computers plugged into a surge protected battery backup.
7.) Disconnect telephone line from computer when not in use.
8.) Disconnect network cable when not in use.

Some of these tips may seem like a hassle to practice regularly but I guarantee you will be glad you did in the wake of a nature disaster.
You can never tell when it’s going to happen so get prepared now.
