Are You Wearing the Wrong Reading Glasses?

By Beverly Marshall

If has finally come to the point where you need reading glasses. You are tempted to go to the store for glasses with so many options available, but you just don’t know what to do. Should you go to the drug store and pick up a pair of cheap glasses or should you let your eye care physician custom make a pair for you? The ready made glasses became very popular in the 90’s and millions of pairs are sold each year. This is only going to go up because the population is aging. The pre-fabricated glasses are less expensive than custom glasses so you can have lots of them in the home, office and car. They can be fashionable in trendy colors so you can take chances with your look without spending a fortune. If you don’t like what you see, just get rid of them and on to the next color. The people I know that have chosen to wear the glam glasses have them everywhere. There are even reading glass pens that hold a pair of matching reading glasses. Wearing reading glasses isn’t the stigma that it once was. The fashion industry has seen to that. They see the baby boomers as one of the largest, fastest growing segments of the population, so why not cash in on it? When you find yourself having some difficulty reading, it is a normal thing to just go to the drug store and experiment with a cheap pair of glasses. Eye care physicians are afraid that most people will do this instead of having a checkup. When you see the eye doctor, they test for other things as well such as glaucoma. If you don’t see the doctor when you are experiencing vision issues, there may be something else wrong and you are must assuming you need glasses for reading. When the quick fix reading glasses from the store are what you want, some things to watch out for are bubbles or waves in the optical lens. They are apt to have small defects, so insist on the best lenses you can find or you may experience headaches, eyestrain and some nausea. If you experience problems such as this, you should definitely consider custom eyewear from the physician. The one-size-fits-all glasses probably aren’t for you.

If you work at the computer screen all day, you may be wearing the wrong glasses completely. Many people don’t know that computer glasses even exist. Printed material is at a different distance than a computer screen. There are special glasses just for the purpose of working with computers. You may also have a style of reading glasses that force you to put your head back to view the monitor. This is putting strain on your neck. There are special glasses just for this problem. You wouldn’t wear reading glasses for driving, or at least I hope you wouldn’t. The same thing goes for computer screens. When you wear the correct eyewear for a computer, this will optimize your productivity. You will be able to see at a distance of eighteen to twenty eight inches instead of the usual sixteen to eighteen inches for reading. You may be finding yourself sitting too close to the computer if you can only see thirteen inches in front of you. This places you closer to the screen and the EMF’s emitted from the computer as well. There are a lot of things to think about when wearing improper eyewear. When it comes to caring for your eyes, don’t cut costs. You only have two eyes and good vision is so important. Let the eye care professionals determine what course and type of glasses would be best for you and your lifestyle.
