Put Your Fresh Face Forward: At Home Microdermabrasion

Did you hear the news? 50 is the new 30! If you are in that league, congratulations! If you are like me, you have managed to successfully survive the single years, corporate ladder climbing, pregnancy and raising children and it's written all over your face! Don't despair, it doesn't have to be. There is an amazing breakthrough in modern beauty treatments that your skin will thank you for. With very little time, mess, effort or money, you can stave off the effects of aging and look years younger with at-home microdermabrasion.

Using beauty treatments at home doesn't mean that you have to sacrifice on quality or results. While there are skin refining and refinishing products available in the drug store that are not as effective or beneficial to your skin (and should be avoided), the at-home microdermabrasion systems developed and sold by trusted beauty companies are the ideal solution to control the effects of aging and bring out your natural beauty!

As a first step in learning about microdermabrasion, it is important to understand what it is and how the process works. Microdermabrasion (which is sometimes be spelled as micro dermabrasion or microderm-abrasion) is a topical, non invasive epidermal treatment that works to eradicate the top dead layer of dry and damaged skin cells, revealing healthy skin that is hiding just below the surface. During a treatment, the deeper dermal layer of skin is also stimulated to increase collagen production which in turn will provide you with younger, firmer and suppler skin. In addition to smoother looking skin, you will see balanced appearance of pigment irregularities, minimized appearance of pores and age spots, reduced appearance of acne scars, reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and the restoration of a more youthful, radiant glow.

Microdermabrasion is a gentle treatment that is highly effective in resurfacing skin to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles; reduces pore size and age spots and then overall improves the texture and luminosity of the skin. The awesome advantage to at-home treatments (which I love) is that it can be done anytime in the comfort of your own home. No need to get dressed and no appointments necessary! The whole treatment can be completed in 10 to 20 minutes and can be used with other at-home treatments such as eye lift creams and chemical peels with excellent results. At-home microdermabrasion is also the perfect treatment to incorporate into your home spa party.

So, let's compare home treatments to professional, clinical based microdermabrasion. High quality at-home microdermabrasion treatments will cost you in the neighborhood of $60 to $200 for a superior system that will last for about 10 treatments. In contrast, treatments performed by a licensed professional does use stronger abrasives and may realize more dramatic results, but will cost on average $150 per treatment, with the average person requiring treatment once a week for 5-8 weeks and then monthly maintenance follow-ups. To put that into perspective, in one year professional microdermabrasion would cost approximately $2,400 while the at-home high grade systems will cost approximately $300 a year for the same regime frequency.

It is absolutely a fact that a professional treatment will yield deeper and more immediate results but also comes with side effects and possible problems, aside from the exorbitant cost. The chemicals used in professional treatment are stronger and can leave skin red and blotchy for as much as two days following treatment. With an at-home treatment, the chemicals used are milder and do not present any danger, with a slight pinking of the skin occurring which only lasts an hour or two.

If you have very sensitive skin, I suggest not performing your at home microdermabrasion treatment the day of, or the night before, a special event such as a date or a wedding. Also, two great tips I can offer: if you want to see maximum results from your microdermabrasion, limit the amount of makeup that you apply to your fresh new skin for 24 hours following treatment. Also, for a few days following your at-home treatment, use a rich, moisturizer twice a day (morning and night) to really give your newly exposed layer of skin a radiant and polished look. If possible, choose a moisturizer that is nutrient rich and non-clogging.

Whether you are 35, 40, 50 or even 60, you have earned a little pampering and although everyone must age, there is no crime in wanting to age gracefully. You have arrived at a time in your life when your kids are independent, your job is great (or you may even be newly retired) and you have more guilt-free time to devote to yourself. I encourage you to try a quality at-home microdermabrasion system and put your fresh face forward. Isn't it time that you look as young as you feel?
