Take a weekend theatre break in Britain

By Richard Green

The number of weekend breaks people take in today's modern world has increased considerably over the last ten years. Instead of spending weekends at home, young, working individuals have been taking advantage of cheaper and more frequent flights to other areas of the country; a couple, both of whom are employed full-time in London, for instance, are more likely to spend the weekend on holiday in Paris than they are in Blackpool. As the concept of the weekend break has evolved, so too has their nature; people are increasingly taking mini-cruise breaks, weekend golf breaks, and even weekend theme park breaks.

One of the most popular forms of weekend break is the theatre break. Travel agents are increasingly offering theatre break deals to London, Edinburgh, Stratford-upon-Avon and even Paris. The London theatre scene is particular ripe at present, if you're thinking about taking a weekend theatre break. From the long running musical of Disney's The Lion King to the very recent stage adaptation of the 1980s hit movie Dirty Dancing, people who are interested in theatre breaks in London have more than a few good pickings at hand.

One of Disney's greatest stories, The Lion King, is playing at the Lyceum Theatre in London, and has been seen by over 30 million people at over 18,000 performances across the world. Much of the beauty of the show is portrayed by the number of puppets and the eclectic animal kingdom represented in it; for instance, there are more than 232 puppets in the show, presenting 25 species of animals, birds, fish and insects. Other high profile musicals playing in London include Les Miserables at the Queen's Theatre, Mary Poppins at Prince Edward Theatre, Guys and Dolls at the Piccadilly Theatre and Andrew Lloyd Webber's legendary musical, The Phantom of the Opera, playing at Her Majesty's Theatre. For those more inclined towards modern dance, weekend theatre breaks in London can incorporate a visit to various productions, including the stage version of Billy Elliot at the Victoria Palace Theatre, the thrilling Dirty Dancing at the Aldwych Theatre and the stage adaptation of Gregory Maguire's Wicked at the Apollo Victoria Theatre, which tells the story of the Wicked Witch of the West.

While many travel agents offer fantastic theatre breaks in London, people who are keen to take theatre breaks in other cities will find plenty to choose from. Shakespeare theatre breaks in Stratford-upon-Avon are also very popular with theatre buffs looking for exciting weekend breaks; choose a theatre break in Stratford upon Avon and enjoy the plays of England's bard in his home town. You could also choose to take a theatre break in Edinburgh, where you can enjoy some fantastic productions at the Edinburgh Playhouse, which is to host upcoming productions such as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Swan Lake and Fame, the Musical, among the other bastions of drama.
