What To Consider When Buying an Online Shopping Cart

By Mike Cook

Perhaps the most important decisions you'll make in your online marketing career is that of choosing a shopping cart system. Once you've made this decision you are probably stuck with it for a while. Even if you decide you've made a mistake, switching shopping cart systems is really difficult. If you buy a quality system it can help make you big money.

If you buy a system that isn't adequate, it can cost you money. There are hundreds, maybe thousands, of off-the-shelf alternative products out there vying for your money, time, or both. Here are some questions you might want to ask yourself when looking for a shopping cart.

Will it let me use different currencies?
If you plan on selling outside of the United States, you will want to have the option to display different currencies such as the Canadian Dollar and the British Pound.

Does it handle specialized shipping like FedEx and UPS?
Many customers, especially businesses, would rather use FedEx and UPS than the United States Postal Service. This can be one of those things you don't really think of but can turn a lot of customers away.

Can I customize the way my Shopping Cart looks?
There are two reasons (among many others) that you would want to customize your cart. First, you want the style to reflect the product. You don't want bright neon colors if you are selling wedding gowns. The second reason is that you might want it to resemble your website. Sometimes people get uncomfortable if they are taken to a shopping cart that looks nothing like the page they were just visiting.

Does it accept credit cards, checks, and C.O.D.s?
People pay for products via the internet in many different ways. If you restrict yourself to just one of these methods you will lose every customer that can't or prefers not to use the other methods.

Overall, it is wise to look through all the features that a shopping cart service offers to make sure that it fits your individual needs. Make sure you are going to get your money's worth. With shopping carts, like many other things, it's worth the time and money to find a quality service.
