Modern City in Venice of North

Amsterdam has been developing since early ages and the development taking place has all the variations and colors of history. Pijp was the first modern city development in Amsterdam at the end of the 19th century. Many houses were built here very quickly for the growing amount of laborers. Nowadays Pijp is known as the perfect example of multicultural society. People from all over the world live here: young and old, students and artists. The main streets in Pijp are Albert Cuypstraat, famous for its market, and Ferdinand Bolstraat. Around these roads there are many exotic restaurants and a typical Amsterdam pub is located on almost every corner.
One of the most cosmopolitan and vibrant districts of Amsterdam is Pijp. It is not clear what de Pijp stands for but the truth is, no one really knows. Perhaps it owes its name to the long narrow streets that resemble pipes or to the infamous gas company, the 'Pipe', which used to supply energy to the area. Whoever or whatever is responsible for the name should be proud of the association.
Formerly a working class quarter built to ease the overpopulated Jordaan in the 19 the century and to house laborers, de Pijp as people of Amsterdam know it today is without doubt a melting pot of cultures and nationalities. Thanks to previous settlers such as Heijermans, De Haan, Bordewijk, Mondriaan and scores of students in search of a cheap room to rent, de Pijp continues to breathe life as the lively bohemian district known as Latin Quarter. The young, old, students, artists, and families have all chosen to make de Pijp their home, and far removed from the hustle and bustle of central Amsterdam, this homely alternative is appealing.
De Pijp is overflowing with fantastic cafés, restaurants, coffee shops and bars. The Albert Cuypmarket, flanked by over 100 shops is always worth a visit. If one wanders down Albert Cuypstraat and Ferdinand Bolstraat, the main streets in de Pijp , one will find many exotic and authentic Syrian, Moroccan, Surinamese restaurants, to name but a few, and a typical Amsterdam pub is located on almost every corner. Also in abundance are the Islamic butchers, Surinamese, Spanish, Indian and Turkish delicatessens and grocery stores.
Mas Tapas is a restaurant where the atmosphere is ultra cool whitewashed Mediterranean and it is buzzing and the tapas equally as exciting. No corners are cut when it comes to taste. There is wide range of tapas from a mouthwatering selection of 12 tapas including the garlicky mushrooms or the marinated fish. Give in to Mamouch, the latest Moroccan neighbor to the multicultural Pijp. Mamouch not only offers an inexpensive menu but a highly minimalist backdrop. The music is simply entrancing.
Albina has extremely friendly service, excellent value for money and very popular with the locals. Its Tjauw minh - thin noodles with meat and veg and gado gado - vegetables smothered in peanut sauce taste superb.
