Tips to set up your computer before you download free or purchased designs

By Larry R. Loughborough

Setting up a folder with sub-folders on your computer will make it much easier to find designs quickly. I have over 700 designs on my computer and if I had not set the computer up from the start as I'm about to describe to you, it would be difficult to find exactly what design I want.

First you should pick a name for the folder where you will download your designs. I used EMB1. In my EMB1 folder I created the following sub-folders: Amphibious, Animals, Auto, Beach Scenes, Bears, Birds, Boats, Bugs, Butterflies, Cats, Children, Christmas, Clowns, Dogs, Fish, Flowers & Gardens, Foods, Fruit, Funnies, Hearts, Holidays, Horses, Jumbi, Misc., Motorcycles, Music, Palm Trees, Parrots, Party, Patriotic, Pirates, Religions, Reptiles, Shells, Signs, Sports, Stars, Trains, Veggies, Wedding, and Wines.

You can choose as many sub-folders as you wish. As you can now see, it is much easier to find the design you are looking for if you have these sub-folders.

To set up the main folder and the sub-folders, follow the following steps:
1.) Click My Computer on your main screen on your computer.
2.) Click where you see Local Disk (C:). This is your hard drive.
3.) On the left side you will see Make A New Folder. Click it.
4.) You will now see the new folder you created. It is named New Folder. Click in that area and change the name to whatever you decided as your main folder. I used EMB1.
5.) Click on this main folder so that you can create your sub-folders.
6.) On the left side again you will see Make A New Folder. Click it. Click again in the name and rename it. On my computer you would see that I named the first one Amphibious.
7.) Now repeat step 6 above for each of the sub-folders you wish.

What you have now accomplished is the main folder where all of your designs will be downloaded. When you download a design just go to the main folder and place the designs in the proper sub-folder.

Now you are ready to search the internet for free designs or purchase some that you really like. Go to whatever search engine you like and type in free embroidery designs. You will see many sites. Some of these sites require you to sign up with an account. This step usually is very quick. Some of these sites will not allow you to download free designs unless you have signed up with them. When you see a design you like, just click it and follow the steps that will be displayed. Do this with the comfort of knowing that you have set up your sub-folders to load them into.
