Mercedes Benz E 320 CDI with the Latest in Diesel Engine Technology Now Has its Partner in Performan

By Jenny McLane

Gone are the days when diesels used to be noisy, smelly, smoky and slow. Electronically injected CDI (Common Rail Direct Injection) engines changes consumers' perception on diesel powertrains. It has strong acceleration, excellent fuel economy and low noise levels.

The common rail is a metal tube alongside the engine where the diesel fuel is maintained under tremendous pressure, up to 23,000 pounds per square inch. Computer-controlled fuel injectors squirt as much or as little diesel fuel as often and as immediately as needed to produce lots of power using little fuel and making minimal noise.

A showcase for the latest in diesel engine technology, the 3.2-liter diesel engine can propel the E320 CDI from 0 to 60 in just 6.8 seconds and cruise up to 780 miles on a single tank of fuel.

Diesels have two big advantages: fuel economy roughly 30% better than gasoline engines, and lots of low-speed torque that is most useful in stop-and-go traffic and other common, low-speed driving situations.

The E320 CDI achieves 27/37 mpg for city and highway driving translating to up to 30 percent better fuel economy than comparable gasoline engines. A showcase for the latest in diesel engine technology, the E320 CDI 3.2-liter diesel engine can propel from 0 to 60 in just 6.8 seconds and cruise up to 780 miles on a single tank of fuel.

Using its newly developed rail fuel injection at around 23,000 psi, plus a turbocharger, the E320 not only attains remarkable mileage but will outperform the gasoline engine E-Class models. Diesels, by nature, have tremendous low-end torque but are generally limited to lower peak rpms. The 201-horsepower 3.2-liter inline six cylinder E320 CDI takes advantage of the low-end grunt, mated with a turbocharger and a five-speed automatic transmission, putting it on par with the performance of the V-6 gasoline engine.

Standard features include automatic, dual-zone climate control; leather upholstery; power steering, brakes, windows, seats, mirrors, locks, steering column; AM/FM/CD/weather band audio; auto-dimming inside and driver's outside mirror; rear-window and outside-mirror defrosters; heated windshield washer system; rain-sensing wipers; cruise control; auto-on/off headlights; front and rear fog lights.
