Mobile Services Epicenter to be Asia-Pacific in times to come

By James Marriot

Japan and Korea, the two countries in Asia-Pacific region, are the largest users of mobile Internet services across the globe. As per the world ranking, seven out the ten most profitable telecom operators belong to Asia itself.

The favorable growth in the telecomm sector in Asia-Pacific region owes to the record increase in the economy of this region and also the improved purchasing power of people. Adding at least one new user per second, Asia-Pacific region has come up as the world's largest telecomm market, during the past four years, to outshine Europe.

Low average price of the handsets is considered to be a major driver, for the mobile phone service providers looking for a profitable market, in the Asia-Pacific region.

Experts believe that the withdrawal of exclusivity by countries such as China, Singapore and Hong Kong will introduce severe competition in international services. Similarly, Vietnam & Thailand also plan to bring in alternative suppliers and allow foreign investment in their markets.

South Asia With a teledensity, i.e. the number of main telephone wires per 100 people, of 4 in 2001 has shown an exponential growth during the past few years and offers a great potential market for the mobile industry.

According to the report, South Asia appears to be a promising location for the telecomm industry, whilst Japan and Korean Republic will continue to play the leaders in the global application of 3G networks across the globe. The constant growth of the Chinese market ensures that the Asia-Pacific region will dominate the world by the year 2007.
