Why Having Your Own Online Business Beats Working 9-To-5

By Demetrius Culbreth

From Rush Hour To Learning Curve if you are trying to decide whether to take the big leap out of that rush hour traffic line into having your own online business, the best thing you can do is talk to people who have already taken that leap and are living the reality of the life you envision.

Finding them is easy- the media is full of success stories and most website businesses have a "contact us" email address. It never hurts to ask for advice, warnings and encouragement from those who are on the path. Some of the benefits are pretty obvious-not having a boss breathing down your neck, making your own hours (leaving time for a personal and family life), eliminating the stress of commuting and office politics, etc.

But there are other benefits you might not have considered, and they are directly linked to how well you take on the challenge. The thing to remember is, once you get rid of that boss, YOU are the boss, and that means you need to retrain yourself to take care of all the details that your boss ordinary handled. Often you will turn around to delegate a task and find that the only one to whom you can delegate it is YOU! One minute you are making policy and the next you are affixing mailing labels.

One of the hidden benefits of having your own online business is the opportunity to grow personally and learn new things all the time. In order to keep your venture thriving, you must keep new things happening at your website. Unlike most businesses, which set up a formula and then function from there with little change, an online business is part of a new frontier. As such, it requires keeping your ear to the ground, constantly assesing and making changes in what you are doing and how you do it. This keeps you curious and busy and constantly traveling that learning curve. It's pretty hard to get into a rut when you are in charge! The reduction in overhead and the deletion of the hidden expenses of working 9-to-5 for someone else are considerable.

Alternatively, if you are now going to be self-employed, you will want to make sure you set up a financially secure structure that includes health insurance and some kind of contingency or retirement plan for yourself. Bottom line, when you trade in your parking pass for your website domain name, you are accepting an opportunity to use all of your unique personal skills, creativity, savvy and resources to build something for yourself and your family.
