Platform Tent Accommodations: History of Tent Rentals in Ontario's Bartlett Lodge
By Kim and Marilyn Smith
Bartlett Lodge is one of a very few resorts located right inside Ontario Canada's Algonquin Provincial Park. Algonquin Park (www.algonquinpark.on.ca) has a worldwide reputation as a wilderness reserve covering some 7725 square kilometers of forests and lakes. The Park was established in 1893 as a wildlife sanctuary and to protect the headwaters of the five major rivers that originate in the Park. Algonquin Park is established as the most important place in Canada for biological and environmental research. Home to hundreds of unique animal and plant species Algonquin Provincial Park is truly one of the North America's last wilderness frontiers. The massive Park is dotted with countless lakes and wetlands and is well illustrated in famous Group of Seven paintings particularly those done by Tom Thomson and the mystic behind his accidental death in the Park.
Only a very few commercial establishments are permitted inside Algonquin Park and Bartlett Lodge (www.bartlettlodge.com) on Cache Lake is one of them. Dating back to 1917 Bartlett has been an Algonquin landmark that has operated with sensitivity to the history and environmental aspects of the area. Access to the Lodge is by boat. The hospitality property is an interesting equation of history, luxury, tradition and modern conveniences. It is one of those places that can give a person true perspective on nature and life in general. For those that reside in urban centers it is a stark contrast to a different time in a place that might as well be a different planet for comparison purposes. When you step off the boat you step into a different world far from the one that most of us live in day to day.
Bartlett Lodge offers the finest in gourmet dining and traditional but luxurious accommodations. There is something special about fabulous dining in a traditional lodge that brings back thoughts of an era, decades ago when the wealthy would make there way north during the summer months to escape the cities and enjoy the outdoors and crystal clear lakes. In that tradition, Bartlett Lodge has introduced platform tents that were a common form of accommodation at lodges during the more active summer vacation season when lodging could not be built fast enough to serve the demands of tourists that would make the pilgrimage to the Park. In the 1920's Bartlett Lodge built their own platform tents and once again 80 some years later guests can stay in modern platform tents in a quiet corner of the Lodge's waterfront property.
