8 Myths About Hair Loss

By Kyle McBride

So you think you're losing your hair? To most men keeping a full
head of hair is only second to keeping your crown jewels intact.
Hair loss can come as a big blow to a man's ego and coping with
male pattern baldness is a difficult task no matter how you look
at it. There is so much information out there on hair loss that it
can be overwhelming separating fact from fiction. The more you
know as truth, the easier the transition to baldness can be.
The good news is that some types of baldness CAN be
prevented and the bad news is that some can't. So lets delve
into some of the more popular myths and see what we can do
answer some of your questions about hair loss, once and for all.

Myth # 1. Wearing hats will cause baldness.

You've probably heard this one your whole life. The good news
is that it is not true. Wearing a hat, unless it's EXTREMELY
TIGHT, will cause no damage to follicles and will not result in hair
loss. Good news for all you ball players!

Myth # 2. Blow drying will accelerate hair loss.

Though blow drying your hair can and will cause split ends and
"breakage" of your hair strands, it will not cause hair to fall off
your head. You will have nicer hair if you do not blow dry
though.

Myth # 3. Excessive use of hair products cause hair loss

Similar to blow drying, hair products can cause damage to
individual hair strands but it will not cause the hair to fall off
your head. Limit use of products for healthier hair.

Myth # 4. Hair loss is genetic, from the mother's side

Certain types of hair loss are absolutely genetic, but it has not
been proven in any study that a mother passes down the gene
more than a father. The odds are the same for both parents.

Myth # 5. Standing on your head is good for growing hair

Though you will increase blood to your head if you stand on it,
there is no way that "extra blood" in the region will stimulate
hair growth. Hair is composed of dead cells and blood flow in the
head region has nothing to do with its growth.

Myth # 6. Eating junk food causes hair loss

There is no question that eating junk food is detrimental to your
health, but it has not been proven in any study that junk food in
and of itself accelerates or causes hair loss. Treat yourself right
though and eat healthy foods. It can't hurt.
Myth # 7. Frequent sun exposure causes hair loss

Frequent sun exposure does nothing to cause baldness, and
sunlight may in fact be good for hair growth and your health in
general. Without overdoing it, you may want to get some of
those healthy rays to stimulate vitamin E production in the body.
The sun is a life-force and in the proper exposure time is very
beneficial.

Myth # 8. Shaving your head will make hair grow back quicker

When hair first grows out of the base of your head, it gives the
APPEARANCE that it is thicker at the bottom. This is simply an
illusion. Regardless of how often you cut or shave your hair the
follicle count does not increase. Hair grows about ? inch a
month for most people.

So there you have it. Eight common myths about hair loss
debunked. Hair loss has no one cause and no one cure but
there are a variety of remedies out there that will possibly help
to stimulate new hair growth. Every person is different and it's
the same with hair loss solutions. Finding the right solution for
you should be a methodical and consistent venture until you find
what works.
