Sony Ericsson Music phones: The pulse of mobile music.

By Ben Bradle

While music phones were still in its initial phase, Sony Ericsson was very quick to cease the initiative. The company came up with a brilliant idea to incorporate the already popular Walkman brand name to its music phone. Walkman phones as they are being called, became instantly popular. Presently the Walkman phones tops the music phone category world wide.

Another great aspect of Sony Ericsson Music phones or the Walkman phones is its individuality. Each Walkman phone can be easily distinguished from the others. The 'W' icon on the handset, the signature orange colour in design as well as the letter W in all the Walkman phones have gone a long way in creating a separate identity for Sony Ericsson Music phones.

The first Walkman phone to be launched was the Sony Ericsson W800i. The phone is powered with a superior media player compared to other handset at the time of its launch. The phone also includes a 2.0 megapixel camera. Offered at a price tag much lower than other handset offering the same functionality, the Sony Ericsson W800i became an instant hit.

The sweet taste of success of the Walkman phone was instrumental in diluting the global supremacy of Nokia and made people take notice on Sony Ericsson handset. It can be safely assumed without going overboard that Walkman phone is largely responsible for the revival of Sony Ericsson as a major competitor.

Following the success of the W800i, Sony Ericsson Music phones came up with Walkman phone models for mobile users across all price band. The W300i – the clamshell phone aimed mostly at youth, and W550i makes the base of the Walkman lineup while higher model includes W810i, the 3G slider W850i. Sony Ericsson W950i represent the top of the Walkman lineup with a superior Walkman 2.0 player and a massive 4GB memory.

Sony Ericsson Music phonesis looking to capitalize by further broadening the Walkman range with W610i, W880i and another W200i on the pipeline.
