Katrina Survival

By Henry Amith

A little forethought and organization will payoff in a great memorable
adventure for that next outdoors excursion you may have planned.

The older liquid gas lanterns give off just as much light but you will have
to refill the tank with liquid gas and this can be messy as well as
dangerous if you are not careful. Both types of lanterns use mantels so be
sure to carry extras.

Have you ever thought you might like to try a totally different Vacation?
Is the cost of your Vacation this year a problem? Did you know that a
week long Camping Vacation for a family of four can work out to under a
$1000.

Most campsite have a fire pit with a steel grill to set the pots on. If there
is a campfire ban in place you can use a portable barbecue. Take the
utensils from the kitchen if you have bbq tools take them. In the
Southern states, peak tornado season is March through May. Northern
states are more likely to be hit with tornadoes during the summer. People
know that during a tornado warning they should move to an interior room
with no windows, or in a basement. When camping, that¡¯s not a viable
option.

Cycling is an excellent and convenient way to explore the national park or
area where you are staying. Bringing along bicycles allows you to just get
up and go wherever you are.

Most campers sleep in tents which are usually made from a waterproof
material like nylon. They can be erected almost anywhere and can be
carried in a small bag so that campers do not have to use a vehicle. More
and more people are traveling these days for different reasons. Some
travel for adventure, some to be close to nature and some for just a
rejuvenating weekend getaway.

Don¡¯t have a tent, or even a backyard for that matter? That¡¯s no reason
not to camp out. Just spread out your sleeping bags, or even just some
blanket in the living room. Turn off the TV, radio and video games. If you
have a fireplace, build a fire. Otherwise, order some pizza and pop some
popcorn and you can even make s¡¯mores in the microwave.

Katrina Survival: Tips to Help You Get Your Life Back on Track

Seeing your house blown apart by ferocious winds and suffering the tragic
loss of lives because of a mere whim of Mother Nature is certainly not an
easy thing to forget. For some people, forgetting is not even an option.
Nevertheless, it¡¯s important to move on and cherish the gift of life that
you and your family are still blessed with.

Tip #1: Get Past Self-Denial

If you or any of your loved ones still find it hard to accept reality, you
must consult an expert immediately to prevent ordinary misery from
deepening into chronic depression. Try your best to remember the good
times instead of the bad times.

Tip #2: Helping Children Cope with the Trauma

As it always is in tragedies, whether they are a result of fate or caused by
man, children inevitably become victims. If you have children in the family,
you must concentrate on helping them recover from what they¡¯ve gone
through. Without maturity and experience to help them better cope with
their loss, children might be severely emotionally, mentally, and
psychologically affected, enough that they could undergo personality
changes or worse, lose the will to live.

Be ready to listen whenever your children show signs of feeling troubled
and confused. At this point in time, your most important responsibility to
your children is to show them that you¡¯re behind them all the way.

It¡¯s important when traveling to bring along the proper clothing. Always
include some rain and windwear, a fleece jacket is also a good idea. A first
aid kit and plenty of drinking water should always be available. Of course if
you are planning on doing any outdoor activities in the winter you will
need more clothing etc.

Given below are the kind of clothes you should get from the stores in
order to keep you comfortable during your trip and the technologies
following these clothes. A roll of tin foil will be needed the thicker the
better. works very well for cooking in .Bring a plastic pail to carry water in.
A plastic basin will work to do dishes and wash up little dirty faces and
hands.

Be sure the lantern you buy is weather proof. If you are camping in colder
weather the gas type of lanterns would be your best choice because not
only do they give of a bright light they also give off a fair amount of heat.
Never use the gas lanterns in the tent.

The thought of camping alone can be very intimidating, especially if you¡¯re
a woman. Ideally, it is not something recommended to women new to
camping.

The next time you are planning on a great camping experience, don't let
the hassle of choosing a campsite get you down. Visit one of these great
websites. With the thousands of campgrounds from which to choose,
there is bound to be a place that is perfect for you and your family.

Cross country skiing is a wonderful way to experience the parks wilderness
during the winter season. Snowshoeing trails may also be available in
parks. More on Outdoor Camping. There are many websites that cater to
campers with information on where to find the most affordable camp gear
as well as the most popular items to buy and use when camping.

Once your kids (and you) recover from the shock of having no television
or Internet access, you'll all have an eye-opening experience.

Assure them of their safety and security without lying. Children¡¯s intuition
is often underestimated by adults. Don¡¯t assume that your child doesn¡¯t
understand the gravity of the situation; they most probably do and more
than you think.

Monitor what they¡¯re watching, reading, and listening to. While it¡¯s
important to let them know the truth about what¡¯s happening around
them, make sure that they hear the truth from you and no one else.
Media, after all, occasionally fails to display the required sensitivity when
addressing children.

Tip #3 Checking Your Insurance Policy

If your life, house, and property are insured, consult your insurance
company immediately to know how much of it can be salvaged.

Tip #4 Checking Your Records

Hurricanes, storms, and earthquakes may cause you to lose your copy of
important papers such as marriage licenses and birth certificates. It may
also cause you to lose your credit card, social security card, driver¡¯s license
etc/.

If any of these appear missing, approach the necessary authorities to
obtain new copies or have a new credit card reissued for your use. Moving
on is always easier said than done but it is possible to achieve. What¡¯s
important is for you not to lose hope.

If you're bringing tins of beans, remember a manual can opener or pack
your Swiss army knife. If you're not sure what to bring, ask an associate
at your local sporting store to help you choose your camping needs. Call
on friends who like to camp, and ask them for advice.

Apart from being submerged in wilderness, an important component of
camping is the interaction with the localities, villagers and natives. These
native guides know the unexplored places, the less traveled paths, the
unknown facts, myths and stories about the locations.

It is a good idea to know what you should and should not do when
coming across animals. Parks often will have signs up if animals have been
sighted in the campground. Looking Good--Last but certainly not least: If
you've never set up your tent before, it's best to practice at home until
you can do it in your sleep (bit of an exaggeration...but you know what I
mean). This will save you any embarrassment later on in the 'Real World'.

Switch things up. If you¡¯ve had the same thing for lunch for the last 20
years, ignore this paragraph. For the rest us, variety is important when
planning for camping food. Put small amounts of different seasonings in
plastic baggies ¨C lemon pepper trout is delicious. Even if you¡¯re going to
eat oatmeal three meals a day for a week, at the very least take different
flavors of oatmeal. With the hectic life many of us lead it would certainly
be great to just "get away" from civilization and have fun in the wild
outdoors. How many of us really know what to do when we get there or
what to take with us in the "survival pack"? Camping can be a really
refreshing lift to life, but roughing it may not come without some sort of
price. Adequate preparation is a must and may prevent your trip into the
wilds from becoming a disaster.

As I rounded a bend blasted through granite, just wide enough to
accommodate a horse-drawn wagon, I braked suddenly and gasped. Make
your van into something that's useable for you, especially if it's going to
be your residence for days or weeks at a time.

Instead of going up to other campers and saying, ¡°Hi, I¡¯m Kerry and I¡¯m
here by myself¡± ask questions like ¡°How can I contact you if I experience
a problem¡± or ¡°is this campground regularly patrolled?¡±Don¡¯t advertise you
are by yourself by finding campsites away from walking trails
