Home Fire Alarms - How to Protect Your Home

By Tanya Turner

Does your house have a modern fire alarm? Are you sure it is working? If your alarm is old or you don't have it at all, it is time to get yourself one. Fire alarms are inexpensive, simple to maintain and don't take much room, but they can save your life and your property in case of fire. Here are important things you need to know about fire alarm systems.

A residential home alarm is easy to install. The simplest one is a device that is attached to your ceiling. It is triggered by smoke, and if it detects smoke, a loud noise starts. More sophisticated alarms are connected to fire alarm monitoring services or your local fire department, to let them know if a fire starts. This is very important, because this way a fire can be prevented even if you are not home. Many fires start as a result of electric failure, while people are at work, so having fire alarm monitoring is very useful

Where to get a home fire alarm

There are many places to get a fire alarm - your local hardware store, home security store or online. Actually buying a fire alarm online is the easiest option, because you can compare styles and prices from different retailers without leaving your room.

Maintaining your fire alarm

Residential fire alarm doesn't need much maintenance. However, one very important thing to remember is that your alarm is powered by batteries. Batteries have to be changed annually. It is a good idea to check regularly that the batteries work, to ensure that your fire alarm works all the time. If the batteries are low or dead, your alarm will not work or might not detect a fire in its early stage.

The best place to get information about fire alarms is your local fire department. They are usually ready to answer all your questions and help you to select the right fire alarm for your home. They will also help you work through the installation and maintenance of your alarm.

If you are renting a house or apartment, installing a fire alarm system is your landlord's responsibility. All you have to do is to make sure that the landlord checks your fire alarm regularly. If you own a house, than it is your job to install a fire alarm. Don't neglect doing this. You don't need a fire alarm in your everyday life; you usually even don't notice its existence. But, it can save your life and your property in case of fire. So this little device is extremely important for any home.
