The Greek Islands – marvelous places to visit

This country is neighbor to Albania, Turkey, Bulgaria and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and it is the only country in EU that doesn't have a shared land frontier with another member in the EU (but that might change with the 1st of January 2007 when it is scheduled for Bulgaria to join the EU). This peninsular and mountainous country dominates the seas from its natural borders, the Aegean and Ionian seas. The surface of Greece, including the Greek islands, represents a total of 131940 square km, divided in 130800 square km of land and 1140 square km of water. Its coastline is 13676 km long.
Located in the Mediterranean Sea, the weather in Greece and the Greek islands consists of two major seasons, a wet season and a dry season. It has dry, hot summers and in July and August it is highly unlikely to see any rain and mild winters. Snow might fall in winter in the mountains. The lowest average temperature in Greece is in one of the Greek islands, in Rhodes, in January and it sinks as low as 5.70 C, but the maximum average temperature rises to 15.20 C. As you can see the temperature does not sink below 00 C, that's why the winters are mild. In summer however the average temperatures rise between 22 and 330 C in July and August, making the summer hot and dry. The highest average temperature is in Crete because it is the most southern of all the Greek islands.

The majority of the Greek islands are in the Aegean Sea, between the mainland and Turkey and these are divided in a number of regions as follows: the Saronic, the group of islands that is closest to Athens, the Cyclades, the Dodecanese, the group closest to the Turkish coast, Crete, the largest island, the Sporades and the northeast Aegean group, which consists of Lemnos, Lesvos, Chios, Ikaria and Samos. The small number of islands in the Ionian Sea includes the Greek islands of Corfu, Ithaki, Kefalonia, Kithira, Lefkada and Zakynthos.
The lowest point in Greece is in the Mediterranean Sea at 0 m of height and the highest point is the Mount Olympus at 2917 m, about which the Greek mythology speaks a lot.
