Piston Rings
By vineet goswami1
Piston rings are mostly used in internal combustion engines, to seal the gap between the piston and the external cylinder wall. The function of the piston ring is to block the air from escaping the cylinder and thus offer a combustion pressure.
Piston rings are used in many applications. Almost every industry, which works on mechanical equipment, requires piston rings of one or the other kind. Without the aid of piston rings, the mechanical operation would have suffered in terms of quality of the equipments and the productivity. The important applications of the piston rings are the following.
" Cars and heavy trucks
" Natural gas engines
" Marine applications
" Compressors, pumps, and other applications
" Mopeds, motorcycles, and earth-moving applications
" Mowing applications
" Aviation sector
Grindlays is one of the leading players in the manufacturing, exporting, and supplying of the piston rings. Their piston rings are made of high quality Grey C.I Castings, which assures a long-life to the piston rings. With this powerful cast, Grindlays' piston rings are capable of withstanding the high tension and high level of temperature.
There are two types of piston rings offered by Grindlays for combustion engines - compression piston rings and oil control piston rings.
Compression piston rings are rectangular, taper-faced, or keystone types. There are two types of compression rings - the top ring and the secondary compression ring. The top ring maintains the pressure inside the combustion chamber. There is a ring gap on the piston that helps to build the pressure. As the pressure increases, the combustion mixture explodes and forces the piston downwards and thus maintains the pressure inside. Secondary compression ring has a ring gap that allows the expelled gases to pass through the cylinder wall and then to the crankcase oil. The expelled contaminated gas otherwise would harm the engine.
The oil control piston rings are of two types - spring-loaded and springless. The oil control piston rings are placed in the lower part of the piston. The main function of these rings is to provide lubrication to the piston and the cylinder walls without leaking the oil in to the combustion chamber. These control the temperature of the piston dome by allowing a continuous supply of oil inside the piston.
Grindlays' piston rings are always demanded in the market because of their friendly features. They have very simple designs and provide the sealing from both the sides. The cast iron ensures the long life. Grindlays' piston rings are easy to install, and they offer a wider torque curve ensuring higher horsepower. What more, they are cheaper than many other piston rings in the market!
Grindlays' piston rings come in the range 23mm to 400mm diameter, making them compatible with any indigenous or foreign engines. Moreover, Grindlays put forth the option of designing any new model of the piston ring according to the specific application.
