Setting Goals to Nourish Your Soul

By Linda Geyer

When you are saddled with work, children, a spouse, or parents, taking care of yourself can become a low priority. Unfortunately, when you don't take care of yourself the other responsibilities in your life you can come up short. It's important to make it a goal to take care of your health and mental well-being first and foremost in your life. This will make you a better mother, father, wife, husband, and friend.

When I was in my early twenties, I had a very busy, hectic lifestyle. I got a cold one winter that just didn't seem to go away. After three weeks of being sick and not taking time off work to get well, I finally went to the doctor. A few tests and a chest x-ray, I was diagnosed with pneumonia. This obviously forced me to take three weeks off work. From that point on I learned a lesson. Without my health, I was no good to anyone. When I'm ill, I stay home and take care of myself. This was the beginning of my goal setting experience to include my physical and health goals.

People who care for themselves can deal with stress and turbulence in their lives better than people who don't pay attention to health and self-care. How can you give proper care to your family, for instance, if you are tired and run ragged? When you choose to focus on your own-well being you are not being selfish. In fact, you are being unselfish by giving the people in your life the best of you. Setting physical goals can be helpful in figuring out and deciding which aspects of self-care you need or desire the most. Set goals and make your physical being a priority in your daily, weekly, and monthly activities.

Taking care of yourself physically includes getting about 30 minutes of aerobic exercise per day. This might seem daunting, but it's really not that difficult if you make it a priority through goal setting. For instance a brisk walk around the neighborhood would satisfy this requirement. You could also go for a bike ride or invest in a treadmill to workout at home.

Eating right is especially important. Learning about nutrition or creating more time to cook healthy meals could be an excellent goal to better your nutritional intake. Healthy eating is critical to your health and your family's health. Learning to cook with less sugars and fats, more fruits and vegetables is crucial to help you stay in shape or lose those extra pounds. Many people choose convenience over health, but with proper goal setting you can slowly aim for a healthy diet that is simple and fast.

"Me time" is really vital for anyone. No matter how much you enjoy your work or relish being with your family it is important to set goals towards 2-3 hours per week that you can be alone and relax. This will help you rejuvenate and be more refreshed. Taking a relaxing bath, exercising, going out with a friend, and reading are all great ideas for how to get a quiet peaceful time in a hectic lifestyle.
