Thrilling cultural opportunities await you in St Tropez, the toast of the French Riviera.

By Martin McAllister

Since the 1960s, St Tropez has generally been seen as a holiday destination for the rich and famous. From Brigitte Bardot in the 1960s to Kate Moss today, St Tropez has been a haven for film stars and fashion icons. But you don't have to be an international jet setter to have an exciting holiday in St Tropez. The variety of sports, activities and interesting sights around the city mean that it can be enjoyed by a variety of holidaymakers.

A lot of people travel to St Tropez via boat along the French Riviera from St Raphael, as the main coastal road can be blocked by constant traffic over the summer months. Many a travel journalist has commented on the stunning sight of the rows of luxury yachts moored along the St Tropez harbour, and it can often cost up to €10, 000 to hire one of these yachts.

The best beaches in St Tropez are located along the coast in the Baie de Pampelonne, which lies just south of St Tropez and east of Ramatuelle. Along the 5 kilometre Pampelonne shore, holidaymakers will find stretches of golden sands overlooking the fabulous Golfe de St Tropez; each beach tends to be around thirty metres wide, with its own individual beach hut or personal tanning area. While some beaches tend to be very trendy, offering fashion shows, others are more peaceful, with restaurants and outdoor cafes right on the water's edge.

If you enjoy watersports, you'll love jet-skiing and driving power boats along the blue waters of St Tropez. Boating enthusiasts especially will have a particular fondness for the city, as an annual Regatta is held every October in the bay of St Tropez. Known as 'Les Voiles de St Tropez', it attracts many classic yachts and always bestows an atmospheric vibe of bustling excitement on the city. Polo fans will also enjoy St Tropez in July and September, a time during which they'll find both the International Polo Cup and the Gold Polo Cup being held.

If you love art, you're sure to enjoy the range of art exhibitions and history of art lectures that St Tropez hosts every month. And if you're hoping to find some excellent French bargains amidst the glamour of St Tropez, visit the Places des Lices, a market where you'll find some interesting items like cheap t-shirts and kitchen items. The fact that this market is set within the more ostentatious part of the city will only add to its appeal, making it one of the most unique attractions in St Tropez!

If you're looking to enjoy the glitz and glamour of this beautiful city in style, why not rent a villa in St Tropez. So whether you want to revel in Cote d'Azur's excellent sailing and watersports opportunities, relax on its idyllic beaches or simply to bask in the simple pleasures of French café culture, make sure St Tropez is on your list of places to visit!
