Shawnee State Park

By David Urmann

Shawnee State Park is located in the 63,000-acre Shawnee State Forest in the beautiful Appalachian foothills near the banks of the Ohio River. Nicknamed "The Little Smokies", these one-time hunting grounds of the Shawnee Indians are among the most picturesque places in the state, featuring erosion-carved valleys and wooded hills.

There are numerous lodging options at Shawnee State Park.
The resort lodge provides a gorgeous view of the surrounding hills with 50 guest rooms, indoor and outdoor pools, a game room and more. The 25 family cottages have 2 bedrooms, a bath with a shower, a living room with a double-wide rollaway bed, a complete kitchen with a microwave, a telephone, a dining area, and a screened porch with a charcoal grill. Campers can choose from 107 sites suitable for tents or trailers, and the campgrounds feature electric hookups, waste disposal, heated shower houses, flush toilets and laundry facilities. A 38-site horsemen's campground with latrines is also available near Bear Lake.

Boating enthusiasts are sure to have a blast at Roosevelt and Turkey Creek lakes. Launch ramps are provided for access to the lakes, which offer boating with electric motors only. Rowboats and canoes are available for rental at Turkey Creek Lake. The Ohio River can be accessed from the park's marina facility.

Anglers can cast their lines into well-stocked lakes for largemouth bass, catfish, bluegill, crappie and trout. An annual trout derby is held at Turkey Creek Lake. Fishing licenses may be obtained at Shawnee lodge.

Hikers can traipse across Shawnee's forested hills on the 60-mile Shawnee backpack trail, which is operated by the Division of Forestry. There are also 75 miles of bridle trails in the forest.
Public swimming beaches are located on Roosevelt Lake and Turkey Creek Lakes. Kids can even get snacks from beachside vending machines.

Bad news golf widows and widowers! There's also an 18-hole championship golf course and pro-shop near the marina on the Ohio River, just a short drive away. Golf orphans can get in on the action too at the miniature golf, which is open to all park visitors.

Picnicking is a popular activity at Shawnee thanks to the many covered picnicking areas around the park. There are also 2 accessible picnic shelters are available at Lake Roosevelt. Both may be reserved for large parties.

Athletes are bound to be busy at Shawnee State Park thanks to the volleyball and basketball courts that are available there. Tennis courts and shuffleboard can be found at the lodge. Horseshoe pits and playground equipment are open to all visitors. Bike and boat rentals allow unprepared guests who want to participate in those activities, and sporting equipment can be borrowed from the lodge.

There is very little to one can't do at Shawnee State Park. Families, couples and groups of pals are all welcome and all sure to have a good time at this excellent Ohio vacation destination.
