Enjoy a relaxing golf break in Scotland

By Martin McAllister

We all need to relax once in a while; whether it's by chilling out with a good book, going for a run or even cooking up a storm in the kitchen! Relaxation is crucial in helping to maintain a healthy body and a contented mind. In particular, playing a sport can be an excellent means of leisure and golf is the sport of choice for many people who are looking to relax. So if you're in full-time employment or in a high pressure job, it can be a good idea to take a weekend break in a popular golfing spot in order to re-gather your senses and calm your nerves.

Britain is a haven for golf-lovers the world over. Scotland, in particular, is a golfers' paradise, with top-class courses in all corners of the country - many of which regularly play host to some of the top tournaments in the golfing calendar. St Andrews, for instance, is world famous for its Old Course which is hundreds of years old. Affectionately known as the 'Home of Golf', St Andrews consistently attracts both top golfers and celebrities, and is home to the Dunhill Cup tournament. St Andrews is also often the venue for 'The Open' - one of the four 'Major' tournaments.

Perhaps you might choose to take a short golf break in Edinburgh, where you'll be within close proximity to a range of top golf courses, including Dalmahoy (East and West), Dunbar and North Berwick West Links. Opting for a golf break in Edinburgh means you can even choose to spend your time wandering around the beautiful city when you're not out on the course!

Over on the west coast of Scotland, Troon provides a spectacular location for golfers to enjoy some serene surroundings and exceptional courses. For an excellent golf vacation, visit one of the many golf courses in and around Troon, including Royal Troon (one of the best links on the west coast of Scotland and another 'Open' venue), Troon Portland, Glasgow Gailes, Prestwick Old and Turnberry.

Gleneagles is perhaps more famously known as the location of the G8 Summit in 2005. However, it also offers some fantastic golfing opportunities. Golfers can choose from any one of three Gleneagles golf courses, including the Gleneagles PGA Centenary Course which was designed by Jack Nicklaus, and is set to be the venue for the Ryder Cup in 2014.

So if you're interested in taking short golf breaks in the UK, Scotland's world-renowned and high quality golf courses provide an excellent challenge for golfers of all abilities, and are sure to deliver the relaxation you're looking for. And while you're there, you can also enjoy all the other delights that Scotland has to offer - from some of Europe's most stunning mountains and castles to the world's best whisky!
