India To Augment Its LNG Imports Significantly By 2012
By James Marriot
On Dec 7, 2006 the Lok Sabha was informed that the import of LNG by India would probably rise to 23.75 Million tons annually by the completion of the eleventh Plan Period (2012).
A sub-division on natural gas approximated a much-needed investment of Rs 400 Billion in the natural gas sector through the 11th Plan period (2007-12), covering LNG terminals, inter-state gas transmission pipelines & city gas distribution pipelines.
It is anticipated that the supply will increase considerably during the 11th Plan Period & would, to a large extent, reduce the demand & supply gap, said Indian Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas.
However, there's a huge gap in demand & supply values of natural gas in the nation. The GoI (Government of India) has embraced a multi-pronged strategy to increase supplies & to bring the demand and supply levels for the domestic market at same level through intensification of domestic Exploration & Production activities under NELP (New Exploration Licensing Policy), utilization of unconventional gases, like CBM (Coal Bed Methane), Implementation of NGHP (National Gas Hydrate Program) for assessment of hydrate resources & their feasible commercial exploitation & importation of gas like LNG, & also via transnational gas pipelines.
As per the RNCOS report "Future Outlook for Global LNG Market (2010)", reducing liquefaction cost, energy security & energy market reforms etc are the market forces that contributes in the expansion of global LNG market. India is expected to be the next potential market for LNG.
