The Very Best Diet Tips

By Chris Chenoweth

Most Americans do not live a healthy lifestyle. Our lives are rushed, stressed and not conducive to healthy eating habits. As a result we eat on the run, eat the wrong foods, and do not get enough exercise. No wonder we are overweight and unhealthy.

There are dozens of diets that promise to be the right one for you. With so many to choose from, it's no wonder we get confused and discouraged. To complicate matters, the best diet for you may not be the best for someone else. However, the following diet tips work for everyone and can be very effective for losing weight and keeping it off.

1. DRINK LOTS AND LOTS OF WATER, at least 8 glasses per day. Sipping it throughout the day is more beneficial than guzzling 8 ounces at a time. Water flushes harmful toxins out of your body, speeds up metabolism, and makes it easier to lose weight and burn fat.

2. EAT BREAKFAST. You MUST eat breakfast as this revs up your metabolism and gets you through the morning. Eat smaller meals throughout the rest of the day. Your smallest meal should be dinner but NEVER skip a meal. You do not want to be a +starve by day binge by night+ dieter. It is very hard on your body.

3. WATCH YOUR PORTIONS. Do not eat super-size meals either at home or when you eat out. Most restaurants serve portions that are much too large. Eat half and take the other half home to eat for lunch the next day.

4. GET ENOUGH VEGGIES AND FRUIT. Make sure your plate is one-half vegetables and/or fruit. Don't like vegetables and fruit? Whip up a fruit smoothie in your blender, have a glass of vegetable juice or fix a pot of vegetable soup. Do whatever works for you.

5. AVOID SUGAR. If you must eat something sweet, suck on hard candy or eat a sugar-free ice cream bar. Your body stores excess sugar as fat. Remember that when you want something that is sugar-laden.

6. DO NOT EAT AFTER DINNER. If you must munch at night, eat negative calories foods like broccoli, celery, carrots, apples, kiwis, leeks or radishes. These foods require more calories for digestion and absorption than the actual calories they contain, hence, negative calories foods.

7. NEVER EAT IN FRONT OF THE TV. If eating at night in front of the TV is your downfall, you must change your nightly schedule. Find a hobby that will keep you busy like reading, working puzzles, listening to music, playing games with your kids, taking a long walk, or anything that will pull you away from the TV. The important thing is to stay busy and take your mind off of food!

8. NEVER EAT WHEN YOU ARE STRESSED. Take a long hot bath, listen to some soothing music, take a long walk, meditate, or whatever works best for you. When you eat in a stressed state, you are usually not even aware of how much you are eating. That can be hazardous to your waistline and your health!

9. ALWAYS LISTEN TO YOUR BODY. It will let you know when it is hungry.

10. YOU MUST EXERCISE. There are no excuses. Try to incorporate movement into everyday activities like housecleaning, working in the yard, walking the dog, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, etc. Walking is the easiest and most effective exercise and can be done inside or outside.

Do no let yourself get discouraged. Your goal should be to lose 1 or 2 pounds every week. If you go a week or two without losing any pounds, it's alright. If you do not gain any weight, consider it a successful week.

The changes you make should be maintained for the rest of your life. To make it easier on yourself, NEVER think of it as a diet. Consider it a brand new lifestyle that will make you feel better, look better, and be healthier.
